Position Overview:
Plumbing and Piping Drafter/Designer is a key member of the Equipment Design Engineering (EDE) team, responsible for the detailed design, modeling, and documentation of plumbing systems integrated into engineered equipment and modular solutions for data center applications.
This role provides technical expertise in plumbing system layout, detailing, and coordination, ensuring designs are accurate, code‑compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with EDE standards. The position works closely with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, quality, and sustaining teams to support efficient execution across projects and product lines.
The Plumbing Designer also plays an important role in improving consistency and quality through mentorship, standardization, and continuous improvement, while remaining an individual contributor focused on technical execution.
Key Responsibilities:
What you will do:
1) Plumbing System Design & Documentation
· Apply EDE design standards, drafting practices, and documentation requirements consistently.
· Support compliance with internal standards and applicable external codes (e.g., plumbing codes, ASME practices where applicable).
· Identify gaps or inefficiencies in standards related to plumbing design and provide feedback to standards owners.
· Support design reviews from a plumbing‑design and constructability perspective.
2) Standards Implementation & Compliance
· Apply EDE design standards, drafting practices, and documentation requirements consistently.
· Support compliance with internal standards and applicable external codes (e.g., plumbing codes, ASME practices where applicable).
· Identify gaps or inefficiencies in standards related to plumbing design and provide feedback to standards owners.
· Support design reviews from a plumbing‑design and constructability perspective.
3) Cross‑Functional Coordination
· Collaborate closely with Mechanical and Electrical designers to ensure fully coordinated equipment designs.
· Work with Manufacturing Engineering and fabrication teams to ensure plumbing designs are practical, buildable, and aligned with shop capabilities.
· Support Quality and Sustaining Engineering by addressing design‑related issues, corrections, and improvements.
· Interface with Design Engineering (DE) as required to maintain alignment between equipment and project documentation.
4) Continuous Improvement
· Identify opportunities to simplify plumbing designs, reduce part variation, and improve clarity of documentation.
· Support development and use of standard plumbing details, assemblies, and design patterns.
· Capture lessons learned from production and field feedback and incorporate them into future designs.
· Contribute to reducing rework, errors, and clarification requests through better upfront design quality.
5) Technical Leadership & Mentorship
· Provide guidance and informal mentoring to junior designers and technologists.
· Support onboarding of new team members by sharing best practices and design expectations.
· Act as a go‑to technical resource for plumbing design questions within EDE.
What You Will Do:
· Ensure plumbing designs are accurate, coordinated, and require minimal rework.
· Drawings and BOMs meet EDE standards and manufacturing needs.
· Strong collaboration with Manufacturing and other design disciplines.
· Improved consistency and clarity across plumbing design deliverables.
· Positive contribution to team capability through mentoring and knowledge sharing.
What we are looking for:
· Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Building Systems, or a related technical discipline.
· Extensive experience in plumbing system design and documentation within an engineered or manufacturing environment.
· Strong understanding of piping systems, components, and fabrication considerations.
· Proficiency with 3D CAD and PLM systems (e.g., Creo, Windchill or equivalent).
· Ability to interpret and apply design standards, codes, and specifications.
· Strong attention to detail with a practical, manufacturable design mindset.
· Effective communicator able to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience designing plumbing systems for HVAC equipment, industrial equipment, or modular building systems.
· Familiarity with data center or mission‑critical infrastructure.
· Experience supporting design reviews and production‑related issue resolution.
· Exposure to standardization, modularization, or design‑for‑manufacturing initiatives.
