Platform Engineer - Mainframe

Mō te tūranga | About the Role

Join Westpac New Zealand as a Platform Engineer and play a key part in delivering business and technology outcomes within our Mainframe environment. You’ll help ensure our banking platforms are reliable and support critical applications, contributing to technology roadmaps that guide continuous improvement and modernisation. As part of our Technology team, you’ll share knowledge, mentor peers, and collaborate to solve complex platform challenges.

Ko tō mahi | What you’ll do

  • Be a strong communicator by sharing clear, timely, and tailored information within your team.

  • Manage and resolve Mainframe incidents and service requests within SLA, taking ownership of response and contributing to post-incident reviews.

  • Enhance Mainframe monitoring, alerting, and automation to proactively prevent issues and reduce manual interventions.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and third-party partners to ensure effective management and support of z/OS systems in alignment with WNZL policies and audit requirements

  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, runbooks, and SOPs for Mainframe processes; share knowledge with peers.

  • Monitor Mainframe system performance, forecast capacity needs, and optimize configurations for reliability and throughput.

  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to right-size workloads, standardize Mainframe configurations, and provide actionable insights.

  • Escalate platform risks early, support disaster recovery testing and drive automation initiatives including PIV testing.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • 2–5 years’ experience in infrastructure and platform engineering, ideally with exposure to Mainframe environments.

  • Knowledge of Mainframe technologies (z/OS, utilities, platform tools) and openness to learn across multiple Mainframe domains.

  • Curiosity and adaptability to work through transition processes and evolving responsibilities.

  • Understanding of automation and scripting (e.g., REXX, JCL) and willingness to build skills in Mainframe automation.

  • Familiarity with Mainframe toolsets such as Endevor, XCOM, DB2, MQ, and scheduling tools (Jobtrac, CA7, Control-M).

  • Strong communication skills to translate technical concepts into business language and collaborate across technical teams.

  • Advantageous skills: basic z/OS systems programming, COBOL application development exposure, SQL and Mainframe monitoring tools knowledge.
