The Role:
Sauce Labs is seeking a highly skilled Platform Architect to serve as the Technical Authority for our shared-services platform. In this high-impact role, you will act as the "CTO" of the platform domain, taking full ownership of its technical vision, architectural integrity, and long-term sustainability.
You will drive the technical strategy that glues our products together, proactively identifying opportunities to eliminate waste and repetition. As the technical conscience of the organization, you will ensure that our platform is not just built, but architected for scale, security, and developer velocity.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Technical Leadership: Define and drive the long-term architectural vision for the platform. You are responsible for the "technical feasibility" and "architectural runway," ensuring that our strategic goals are backed by a robust and sustainable technical roadmap.
- Architectural Ownership: Take ownership of the platform's design integrity. You will define the "paved paths," shared APIs, and integration standards that enable product teams to release with confidence and speed.
- Cross-Product Unification: Align our systems into a cohesive ecosystem. You will identify recurring challenges across product teams (e.g., authentication, tenancy management, logging) and architect shared solutions to solve them once, permanently eliminating code duplication.
- Platform-as-a-Product: Treat the platform as a product and our developers as your customers. Measure success by the reduction in cognitive load for product developers and tangible improvements in DORA metrics (Deployment Frequency, Lead Time).
- Technical Governance: serve as the governing authority for API standards (REST, gRPC, GraphQL) and software patterns to ensure seamless integration between distinct Sauce Labs product lines.
- Architect for Cost-Efficiency: Champion "Architecture for Cost-Efficiency." Design systems that are inherently cost-effective and implement architectural patterns that optimize resource utilization on GCP.
- Hands-on Execution: Lead by example as a builder. Design and prototype critical cloud-native solutions on GCP and lead the implementation of complex integrations.
- Mentorship & Influence: Elevate the technical maturity of the organization. Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and security-first thinking.
Required Skills:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in software development and architecture of scalable SaaS systems.
Technical Skills:
- Cloud Data Architecture: Experience architecting stateful systems on GCP (e.g., Cloud SQL, Spanner, GKE stateful sets), with a focus on multi-tenancy and data isolation strategies.
- Software Development: Proficiency in most popular programming languages (e.g., Go, Java, or Python).
- API & Identity Security: Deep expertise in API design and identity management protocols (OAuth2, OIDC, SCIM, JWT) to secure and unify cross-product communications.
- Virtualization & Containerization: Proficiency in technologies such as Docker and advanced Kubernetes skills. Deep knowledge of Linux is a must (Mac and Windows knowledge is a plus).
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Experience with tools like Terraform or Cloud Deployment Manager.
- Performance Engineering: Proven record of tracking and fixing latency and load issues for diverse workloads in various environments.
- Network Architecture: Solid understanding of principles including VPCs, subnets, routing, and firewalls, as well as on-premises data center infrastructure.
- Observability: Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Process & Documentation: Ability to shape documentation and process best practices, including DevOps practices.
Process & Collaboration
- Strategic Mindset: Ability to balance technical purity with business reality, prioritizing "shipping value" while maintaining architectural standards.
- Data-Driven: Excellent problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset for optimizing performance and costs.
- Communication: Strong ability to articulate technical strategy to both engineers and leadership.
