Required Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of five (5) years experience managing related to building and grounds maintenance or construction
- At least two (2) years experience coordinating or supervising the work of others within healthcare facilities maintenance or engineering
- Proven program management experience
- Initiative (recognizing and doing what needs to be done before being asked to do it)
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
- Computer applications experience (Microsoft Word and Excel, and a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)).
OTHER:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be dependable, trustworthy, enthusiastic, patient, polite, and thorough
- Strong human relations skills coupled with the ability to work with hospital staff, and people from outside the organization
- Articulate oral and written communications skills
- Must be willing and able to learn, share knowledge with, and teach, others
- Must have the ability to read and interpret blue prints and specifications for installation and maintenance of equipment, systems, and assemblies
- Numerical ability necessary to make proper calculations for estimates of repairs and maintenance, and to prepare reports
- Experience keeping accurate and legible records and making reports and passing healthcare facilities accreditation surveys (CMS or Joint Commission – preferably both)
Preferred Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college in Engineering or related field (e.g. Engineering Technology) preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager preferred
- Professional Engineering registration a plus
- General mechanical, electrical, plumbing, grounds keeping, as well as strong customer service skills
- The ability to inspire others in the performance of their duties is an excellent trait to exhibit for this position
- Able to coordinate multiple projects, and meet schedules and negotiated commitments
- Specific knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and the ability to use an electrical meter would be helpful
- Financial management experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the Engineering Supervisor, Production Control staff, Engineering and Grounds keeping crews
- Assist with interviewing potential employees, and training those hired
- Serve as the second line Supervisor, along with the Assistant Manager of Engineering, for personnel issues including, but not limited to; approving time off; performance evaluations; grievances and initial disciplinary action
- Review departmental policies, update and develop new policies as necessary
- Enforce policies and procedures for all department personnel on an equal basis
- Perform spot inspections to verify quality control of work done by crews
- Ensure work performed by staff is equal to or above established codes and standards, and completed in a safe manner
- Follow-up to ensure, needed equipment, materials and supplies get ordered as necessary
- Assume responsibility for keeping work areas safe, orderly, and appropriately clean
- Be familiar with proper start-up, testing, running and shut down procedures along with preventive and general maintenance on major / key maintained equipment and systems (e.g., Life Safety related and critical Utilities)
- Oversee the management of the CMMS to track Life Safety, Periodic/Preventive Maintenance, and other work order records and statistics
- Be alert for unsafe conditions, and items needing Plant Engineering attention
- Direct Work Orders be issued to correct such conditions, and ensure follow-up is done on corrective actions
- Report more serious problems to upper management for instructions and/or possible contract scheduling
- Plan and determine priorities for special projects, ensure they are properly coordinated, and monitor their status
- Establish departmental performance goals and objectives
- Manage departmental resources to effectively accomplish goals and objectives in the most efficient manner
- Develop and manage the department budget, and compile requested reports for upper management
- Help guide staff development, performance improvement and personal educational goals
- Keep abreast of information and developments within the field of field of buildings and grounds management, and supervision
- Utilize management tools to track and improve performance (e.g., computerized maintenance management system, Thomson 100 Top Hospitals®, ‘Dashboards’, Six Sigma®, etc.)
- Direct the preparation of reports required by upper management
- Keep a neat personal appearance
- Learn and abide by other applicable SJRMC / Department policies and procedures
- Maintain required competencies: HIPAA; safety; infection control; HealthStream on-line courses; and various other necessary education (e.g., attend in-service training sessions)
- Perform all other duties as may be assigned
- Be committed to the concept of continuous improvement in all aspects of job duties
- Each caregiver is responsible for implementing SJRMC’s Service Standards into their daily work: Safety, Courtesy, Effectiveness, and Stewardship
Physical Demands and Environmental Work Conditions:
- Typical work includes about a 60/40 mix of office work and moving around various areas of buildings and grounds
- Requires a lot of walking, standing, stooping, and climbing
- May also require crawling, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting (up to 50 pounds)
- Will be required to work in sterile healthcare, as well as electrical/mechanical areas (with moving machinery, dust, noise, and heat)
- May be required to wear personal protective equipment
- Normal eyesight, hearing, and manual dexterity with both hands are necessary for safety purposes
- Must be able to concentrate, pay attention, yet remain alert to surrounding dangers
