The Plant Engineer role for our Cavalier Energy Centre (east of Strathmore) is an incredible opportunity to do rewarding work in one of Alberta’s best natural gas combined cycle power generating facilities, and sleep in your own bed every night!

Commute to and from work in the opposite direction of the traffic and only make that drive 3 days per week. Our hybrid work schedule means you work from home on most Mondays and Fridays. This is a great plant with a great team, a good portion of which have been working there since it opened in 2001. This pivotal role serves as the on-site single point of contact for the engineering needs of the facility. Through close collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, and Management at their host facility as well as colleagues on the fleet engineering team, the Plant Engineer works as part of the overall Generation team to maximize facility performance, availability, and reliability.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for on-site engineering standards, practice, support and troubleshooting

  • Monitoring equipment performance and addressing equipment design exceedances & alarms

  • Ensure that plant modifications, updates, and improvements are undertaken in accordance with ENMAX processes and procedures, using sound engineering principles

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory programs and requirements i.e. PEIMP, PSMP, PLIMP, EQMP, etc.

  • Coordinate on-site MOC activities and planning outage work orders

  • Raising PI&Rs for unplanned events, unsatisfactory conditions and audit findings

  • Collaborates in the development of mid-term and long-term capital plans and asset management plans to optimize the facility’s lifecycle

  • Support Supply Chain Management in recommending & evaluating vendors capable of providing services, parts and materials required for plant operational and capital work

  • Provide feedback regarding engineering and compliance-related costs for development and management of the facility’s operational, maintenance, and engineering budgets

  • Supports the development of fleet standards and procedures in areas of expertise and contributes to audits, inspections and assessments for continuous improvement

  • Management of facility technical documentation including drawings and technical manuals

  • Development and implementation of detailed engineering reports, equipment status reports, capital planning, and variance reports

  • Provides engineering expertise and input to event root cause investigations, and the development of associated corrective and preventive actions

  • Provides facility Management of Change (MOC) coordination and execution, operations & maintenance support and engineering and project development, execution and management

  • Supports the development and implementation of asset management plans as well as equipment risk assessments by providing expert assessment of equipment conditions/requirements based on OEM recommendations

  • Supports the development, monitoring and achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the facility based on areas of expertise and sound engineering principles

Education Required:

  • B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or other equivalent

  • Registration with APEGA as professional Engineer

  • Specialized courses in project management considered an asset

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years as a practicing professional engineer, with preference for experience in the power industry

  • Strong understanding of power plant systems including combustion turbine technology, heat recovery/boiler operation, balance of plant equipment

  • Understanding of long-term asset management principles including risk management, reliability principles, value assessment and continual improvement

  • Experience in project management from initiation and business case development through design and construction

  • Experience in overhauling and troubleshooting static, rotating and/or electrical equipment

  • Strong understanding of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) particularly IBM Maximo®.
