Job Summary

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. The transformational acquisitions of Concho Resources Inc. and Shell Enterprises LLC’s prolific positions in the Delaware and Midland Basins in 2021 further strengthened the company’s position in the Permian Basin. At year-end 2024, the company held over 1 million total net acres in the Permian Basin.

During 2024, net production averaged 775 MBOED.

Position Overview

As a Planning Economist, you will provide accurate and actionable economic evaluations that guide critical decisions across ConocoPhillips. This role works within a multidisciplinary team and offers exposure to the Permian Leadership Team and Executive Leadership Team (ELT). It is ideal for professionals seeking to build on a financial background while gaining experience in strategy and economic analysis.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinate with asset teams to produce Long Range Plans (LRP), Budget, and Outlook forecasts, ensuring timely delivery for management review

  • Deliver clear, well-structured economic analysis that supports portfolio evaluations and enables informed decisions

  • Develop, maintain, and run economic models, primarily using Excel

  • Refine and update financial planning variables such as shrink/yield, realizations, and transportation & processing costs

  • Respond to inquiries and support management in understanding business results and projections

  • Assist with reserve economic modeling in collaboration with the Chief Reservoir Engineering team

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Geology, or related field

  • 3 or more years of experience in the oil and gas industry

  • Basic understanding of how key financial and quantitative indicators impact business performance

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, Teams)

Preferred:

  • 1 or more years of experience preparing and delivering presentations to leadership

  • 1 or more years of experience applying economic modeling tools

  • 1or more years of experience facilitating multidisciplinary teams in problem-solving sessions

  • Basic proficiency in upstream project cash flow construction, economic measures of merit, and related financial metrics

  • Intermediate knowledge of decision and risk analysis processes and methods

  • Strong focus on quality control and ability to complete tasks independently

  • Highly motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

  • Strong team orientation and collaboration skills

  • Self-starter with the ability to manage responsibility and handle periods of high workload

  • Actively listens and values diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration and influencing positive outcomes

  • Takes ownership of commitments and holds self and others accountable for ethical, timely results

  • Plans realistically and delivers results through effective prioritization and execution
