Job Summary: The Pipefitter position is in the Facility Management Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System located at the Augusta, ME location. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.

Major Duties:

  • The purpose of the Pipefitter position performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance of buildings, equipment and utilities systems. Primary responsibility will be in the plumbing and pipefitting trade. Duties includes, but are not limited to: Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipe and tile, and how to caulk and seal such things as elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains. Remove, clean, reinstall, or replace joints and fixtures, for example, traps, faucets, and unions. Have the skill needed to hook up equipment (for example, water heaters and disposal units) to installed systems, and replace sections of pipe and tile by following previously-used routes, hangers, and levels. Knowledge of how various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment, such as water and gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets, are installed and operate. Ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various systems and equipment, for example, the routing, openings, slant, and level of gas and water lines, and the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment. Knowledge of how various high-pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, and vacuum systems, radiators, and circulating pumps, are installed and operate. Know how relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, and other pressure supporting and controlling devices are installed and how they operate to control increases and decreases in pressure, flow, circulation, and expansion in the systems. Able to lay out and install various kinds of piping, risers, and flexible branches at the proper level. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Effort: Required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds and, less often, over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in the winter and summer, making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, cold, slippery, wet, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped, and with unpleasant odors. Work locations include elevated platforms, man-holes where they are exposed to the danger from explosions of equipment and cables, high-voltage electrical shocks and burns. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials necessitating the wearing of protective clothing and breathing masks. They may also be called upon to work extended periods of time to support emergency situations and power outages and may also be subject to call backs. The incumbent must work in a safe manner, wear appropriate PPE, and follow all applicable safety policy and practices.
