This position is located at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Washington DC. The Washington DC VA Medical Center , located within sight of the Nation's Capitol, is the only health care system that specifically provides care to Veterans. Offering tertiary care in a Complexity Level 1A hospital.

Major Duties:

  • Develop and maintain an ambulatory pulmonary medicine practice. Provide Pulmonary and Critical Care consultations in the inpatient and outpatient context. Perform routine Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine procedures. These include bronchoalveolar lavage, brush, endobronchial and transbronchial biopsy. Other procedures include bedside ultrasound guided thoracentesis, pig-tail catheter, and chest tube placement. Routine critical care medicine procedures, including, central and arterial lines, ventilator management, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, right heart catheterization, tracheal intubations etc. Additionally, point of care ultrasound utilization in the critical care and pulmonary settings. Interpret pulmonary function tests, including cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Complete all Medical Record documentation requirements as specified in the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations on a concurrent basis. Provide clinical consultation in person, over the phone, via Interfacility consults (IFC) or by video clinic (VVC). Communicate with patients via Secure Messaging. Clinical Care of patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit including weekends. Supervise and instruct Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellows, Internal Medicine residents, and medical students, on Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine Services. Serve as faculty attending and cover ICU team consisting of a fellow, medical residents, and medical students, including daily teaching and work rounds. Develop, implement, accomplish, & monitor goals for Pulmonary curriculum. Provide 6 to 8 core curriculum lectures per year in the areas of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine for the GWU Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow education program. Serve as attending for the fellows and residents while on the Pulmonary consult service. Supervise fellow, resident, and medical student procedures. Provide mentorship to GWU PCCM fellows interested in academic medicine and IM residents interested in Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship training. Serve as the Medical Director Respiratory Care which is a part of The Pulmonary Medicine Section. Serve on DC VA Medical Center department and hospital committees as requested by the division chief. Maintain an academic affiliation with the GWU Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Medicine of the Department of Medicine. Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care. Collaboration with other VA Medical Center's within the VISN to establish a strong referral base for our MICU program. Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication. Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits. Ensure that performance measure and standard of care are met by the respiratory care service as well as oversee day-to-day operations. Implement a plan for improving respiratory care services including developing & improving on existing protocols, health quality measures and clinical outcomes. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of clinical experience after fellowship training; Leadership within RT is also desired.
