Job Summary: A Hospitalist can practice all types of inpatient medicine, including observation, acute, progressive care and cross-coverage of intensive care unit patients in collaboration with ICU primary teams, trainee education, scholarly activity consistent with academic promotion, and quality improvement measures.

Major Duties:

  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026 or until all positions are filled. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 15 February 2026, with subsequent cut-off dates every two weeks. Major Duties and Responsibilities to include but not be limited to: Overall responsibilities can be divided across: Inpatient Clinical time 90%-95% Administrative/ Scholarly (e.g. Quality Improvement and Committee activities, completing evaluations/ discharge summaries etc., mentoring students and house-staff, educational/ curriculum development and QI research, writing, and publishing) Specific Hospitalist responsibilities within the Hospital Medicine Section of the RICVAMC Medical Service: Day-to-day clinical activities which include: Attending on inpatient teams; staffing the Medical Admitting Attending, COVID-19 Unit, Non-academic Hospitalist, Admitter, Night shift positions, Flex position, Post-discharge hospital follow-up position, and Back-up positions. Participates in Quality Improvement and Systems Redesign projects; required to follow through with projects and show evidence of completed project. Participates in educational activities for residents and students i.e. morning report, afternoon teaching, PCM, curriculum development. Provides continuing educational activities to peers. Participate in Committees, RCAs and QI projects. Attends all administrative meetings of the Medical Service. Completes twice-yearly Professional Practice Evaluation; Completes all PEER Reviews by due date. Attends Grand Rounds weekly when on service. Attends Bi-weekly Section meetings (unless dealing with an emergency or off). Completes TMS modules by deadline. Attends IDT rounds daily when on service. Completes other tasks as delegated by the Chief of Staff, Chief of Medicine, or Section Chief. Computer Security: Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. Uses CPRS for medical record documentation. Abides by HIPAA and the VA Privacy Regulations. Uses the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System. Customer Service: Effectively communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g. nursing, surgery, social work, etc.) to facilitate treatment planning and implementation. With few exceptions, participates effectively in team meetings, treatment planning conferences, etc. Collaborates with divergent multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. The employee's relationship with supervisors, co-workers, patients, visitors, and the public is consistently courteous and cooperative in nature, and overall contributes to the effective operation of the hospital. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
