Job Summary: This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026. Major Duties:

Major Duties/Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to: Serves as a staff physician with the Medical Specialty Care Service Line to provide care services to hospitalized veterans at the Atlanta VA Decatur campus. The physician will also supervise and teach trainees and participate in quality, performance improvement, compliance, patient safety, and other administrative initiatives as assigned by the chief of service. This staff physician reports to the Chief of Endocrinology with the Chief of the Medical Specialty Care Service Line as secondary supervisor. Clinical & Teaching - Duties (50%) Clinical duties will be on service on the inpatient medical wards of the Atlanta VA, Decatur campus. The physician will provide direct patient care while supervising and teaching a team of internal medicine residents, medical students, and other trainees. Expected clinical service is minimum of 17 weeks/year (including some weekends and holidays and availability at night while on service). Some back-up call (approximately 3-4 days/month) may also be required. Program Coordination/Quality & Performance Improvement Duties - (50%) Physician is expected to spend nonclinical time pursuing mission-critical work as specifically coordinated with the service line chief. This work will be primarily focused on developing quality and performance improvement projects & coordinating vital service line or medical center initiatives. Specifically, the physician will serve as a medical clinical site associate director for students and trainees from institutional affiliates, the internal medicine residency associate program director and all duties encompassed therein for Morehouse School of Medicine, and other assistant leadership roles and responsibilities in education for Medical Specialty. Other Significant Responsibilities: The incumbent meets the needs of customers while supporting the VA mission. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, family members, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, professional, and respectful manner. The incumbent provides age-specific care that is appropriate to the gender, sexual preference, cognitive, emotional, cultural, and chronological maturation needs of the patient. Demonstrates knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric age groups; ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's status; and ability to identify age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the age-related factors. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Subject to change based on the needs of the agency.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
