Job Summary: The Deputy Chief of Staff reports to the Chief of Staff and serves as the principal assistant to the Chief of Staff in all clinical, administrative, and performance matters. In the absence of the Chief of Staff, the individual reports to the Medical Center Director and is responsible for all duties usually conducted by the Chief of Staff, including the assumption of responsibility for all medical care, educational programs, and research activities of the medical staff of the Medical Center.

Ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals. Reports to the Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the Medical Center Director and the Chief of Staff. Hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the service, including extensive research program and guidance and training for residents and other trainees. Review providers Vetpro files, privileges, scope of practice, appropriate functional statements, current and active licenses, and certifications. Strategic planning on projected need of the facility as well as patient and staff feedback. Directs the continuous measurement and improvement of the quality of care provided by all service in the COS service. Ensures clinical services are in compliant with accreditation and regulatory policies as well as VACO with all clinical services. Fiscal responsibility and oversight for all services in the Chief of Staff lane, including budget planning and management. Collaborates with other service chiefs in the development and execution of the overall Medical Center strategic and business plan. Clinical Duties: Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. Function as an expert consultant in health promotion and disease prevention and uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs to promote healthy behaviors among employees. When coordinating employee health education programs, takes into consideration the age and developmental needs of employees. Ensure practice-based learning and improvement, practitioners are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that facilitate establishment and maintenance of professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. Demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward patients, as well as profession. Demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care. Work Schedule: Full Time 8:00am -4:30pm

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. The physical requirements for this position may include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: moderate lifting (15-44 lbs.); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs.); Reaching above shoulders; use of fingers; walking (up to 6 hours); Standing (up to 2 hours); Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted; mental and emotional stability required.
