Second, the incumbent must provide administrative and research leadership that promotes clinical trial research at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. This includes providing physician leadership to the Research Commons area, guiding new investigators through the clinical trial research startup process at MEDVAMC, and providing on-going mentoring to junior investigators. The incumbent will also provide guidance for MEDVAMC clinical research to mid and senior level clinical researchers. The incumbent will promote clinical research by assisting with growth of both number and enrollment success of clinical trials at MEDVAMC through his/her research leadership. S/he will also be directly involved in the long-term strategic planning for clinical trial growth, including executive management and planning with the Research Service Line leadership and other key stakeholders. Finally, the incumbent will be expected to foster a good working relationship with the Office of Research and Development NODES leadership and provide guidance and leadership to the MEDVAMC NODES. Responsibilities This includes responsibility for the administrative and technical supervision and management of the administration and operations functions within the Research Service Line and NODES including supervision of staff. Exercise supervisory authorities and responsibilities involving work assignments and reviews, as well as the administrative and personnel management functions. Establish guidelines and performance standards for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Resolve informal complaints and grievances. Provides advice and counsel to the Research Leadership Team related to work and administrative matters. Effects disciplinary measures, such as warnings and proposed reprimands, recommending other action in more serious cases. The incumbent must have a working knowledge and understanding of the techniques of supervision and employee relations, including various methods of training and orienting a variety of people at all levels of skill and education. Responsible for planning and carrying out assignments, recognizing and resolving conflicts, coordinating and delegating the work of subordinates, coordinating with staff and management personnel, and conducting all phases of the program. May be called upon to occasionally cover duties as Acting ACOS/R in case of leave. Work Schedule: To be discussed during the interview process

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Clinical trail research experience is required.
