Job Summary: Education, length of practice, and a candidate's surgical subspecialty are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay). An opportunity exists for a full-or part-time Chief of Surgery at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center located in Milwaukee, WI. The total FTEE and schedule of a part-time surgeon will be discussed/considered by the Zablocki VA Chief of Staff during the review process, if being considered.

Major Duties:

  • The Surgical Care Division is one of the largest, most diverse clinical services positioned directly under the Chief of Staff and serves as a complex entity in the level 1A medical center. The Division is composed of multiple programs and specialties working together to accomplish the missions and goals of the Zablocki Health Care System, and positively represent the medical center as a major healthcare facility. The Surgical Care Division includes over 150 full time and part time clinical, technical, and administrative FTEE as well as over many fee-basis/consultant and without compensation staff. The Surgical Care Division Manager is responsible for the quality of surgical care services provided to Veterans, direct supervision of Section Chiefs, and responsible for the medical staff-related functions for all faculty within the Division, including but not limited to: Continued surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Division who have delineated clinical privileges and Scopes of Practice through Focused and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE and OPPE); Recommending to the Medical Staff the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the Division. Recommending clinical privileges for each member of the Division. Assessing recommendations for off-site sources of needed patient care, treatment, and services not provided by the Division and communicating the recommendations to the relevant organizational authority. The Surgical Care Division Manager is also expected to partner with the Zablocki VA's core graduate medical education (GME) academic affiliate, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), in addition to many other affiliates for other allied health and clinical training programs. A portion of the Division Manager's time will also be dedicated to providing clinical care within their respective specialty at the VA. Additionally, the Division Manager will be part of Zablocki VA's leadership forum with fellow Division Managers and will be responsible for Department-level strategic planning, succession planning and other operational requirements to support quality Veteran care and employee wellbeing. Duties and programs under the purview of this position include activities involving: Administration - Business Operations and Quality/Performance Improvement Audiology Cancer Registry Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery ENT (Otolaryngology) General Surgery Neurosurgery Ophthalmology Optometry Orthopedic Surgery Plastic Surgery Podiatry Urology Plastic Surgery Work Schedule: Full- or Part- Time; Day Shift 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (or as agreed upon by the Chief of Staff) VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified Preferred Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience is preferred along with a minimum of three (3) years of clinical leadership experience.
