About the role
The Physical Markets Trader plays a key role in managing AGL’s wholesale electricity procurement costs by overseeing the real‑time operation of AGL’s generation assets within the National Electricity Market (NEM). Working across an 8,000MW generation portfolio, the role is centred on short‑term optimisation—balancing fuel constraints, plant outages and regulatory obligations to ensure efficient and compliant operations.
You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues across fuel, gas, operations and trading teams to translate market conditions into commercially sound and operationally effective decisions. The team operates in a dynamic 24/7 environment, and as part of this, you’ll participate in a rotating roster that includes overnight and weekend shifts. This is a high‑performing, collaborative team that values clear communication, sharp decision‑making and continuous improvement, while ensuring alignment with AGL’s internal policies and external regulatory frameworks.
Optimise dispatch and short‑term planning of AGL’s generation assets, including fuel requirements, outage planning and compliance with National Electricity Rules.
Manage Power Purchase Agreements to ensure AGL meets obligations with third‑party generators.
Maintain compliance with market rules and AEMO procedures through monitoring rule changes and conducting regular operational reviews.
Uphold AGL’s Health, Safety and Environment standards across all operational and trading activities.
Collaborate across business units, demonstrating AGL values and supporting high‑quality, enterprise‑wide decisions.
Submit offers and rebids for AGL’s coal, gas, hydro, wind, solar, battery and diesel assets into the NEM, and manage gas nominations within contractual limits.
Operate AGL’s electricity portfolio 24/7 in line with bidding policies, procedures and approved delegations.
A tertiary qualification with strong quantitative grounding (engineering, economics, actuarial science).
Ability to make confident, timely decisions under pressure in a fast‑paced trading environment.
Experience in electricity spot markets or analytical roles that directly support trading.
Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation abilities.
Understanding of traded commodities, financial derivatives and key market fundamentals.
A collaborative and adaptable mindset suited to a small but high‑performing team.
We'd love to see your applications by Monday 30th March 2026.
