Position Overview

Akicita Federal is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Phlebotomist to provide clinical laboratory support services at the Indian Health Service (IHS) White Earth Service Unit in Ogema, Minnesota. The Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing blood collection, specimen handling, and patient interaction services in support of diagnostic testing and treatment. This role requires strict adherence to clinical protocols, safety standards, and culturally competent patient care practices.

Key Responsibilities

Specimen Collection & Patient Care
-Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection for patients across all age groups, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
-Verify patient identity and ensure accurate labeling of all specimens
-Explain procedures clearly to patients and provide reassurance to ensure comfort and cooperation
-Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond appropriately
-Deliver patient-centered care with respect for cultural sensitivity and community values

Specimen Handling & Processing
-Prepare, label, and transport specimens in accordance with established laboratory protocols
-Ensure proper handling requirements are maintained, including temperature control and time sensitivity
-Accession specimens into laboratory systems accurately and efficiently
-Maintain specimen integrity and minimize errors or delays

Laboratory & Safety Compliance
-Adhere to all applicable IHS policies, infection control procedures, and safety standards
-Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements
-Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
-Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment
-Administrative & Support Functions
-Document all procedures and patient interactions accurately
-Assist with laboratory support tasks and clerical duties as needed
-Maintain adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies and notify leadership of shortages
-Support overall laboratory operations as directed

Minimum Qualifications
-High School Diploma or equivalent required
-Completion of a formal Phlebotomy training program preferred
-National certification (e.g., ASCP, AMT, NHA) preferred
-Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical or hospital setting preferred
-Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
-Proficiency in venipuncture and specimen collection techniques
-Knowledge of laboratory procedures, specimen handling, and medical terminology
-Understanding of infection control practices and safety protocols
-Ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations, including Native American communities
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Ability to remain composed and effective in high-demand clinical environments

Work Environment & Schedule
-Clinical setting within the White Earth Service Unit
-Full-time schedule, typically 40 hours per week
-Requires standing for extended periods and handling biological specimens
-May involve exposure to infectious materials
