Summary

Identifies patient, uses good technique to obtain specimen using venous or capillary methods, verifies and labels specimen prior to leaving patient. Prioritizes and transports specimens within stated TAT.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.  In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Performs accurate and appropriate collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures

  • Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures

  • Follows established hospital policies for maintaining a professional, responsible, and courteous environment for patients, visitors, and fellow employees

  • Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees.

  • When requested, performs duties required to cover in Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator’s absence

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Phlebotomy training required

  • Certification eligible preferred

Work Experience

  • None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate blood collection/handling techniques

Physical Requirements

  • Interacts with patients according to the Erickson model of development

  • Moderate to heavy amounts of walking

  • Light lifting up to 25 pounds, general motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling

  • Manual dexterity

  • Ability to speak plainly

  • Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors

  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
