Radar Interference Mitigation

Automotive imaging radar sensors are becoming an essential ingredient for driving assistance and self-driving cars. With increasing market penetration, it is expected that interference from other radar sensors becomes more severe and limits radar sensor performance by causing ghost images, blurring, or blinding. The need for higher image resolution demands more antennas and larger sensing bandwidth, amplifying the interference problem.

Do you have a strong interest in signal processing, radio communication, stochastic signals, image processing, or neural networks?
You can help us solve this problem!

Proposed Research
You will investigate the influence of radar interference from other vehicles and study ways to prevent interference or minimize its impact, targeting reliable sensing using safety-critical radar sensors. By simulating modelled traffic scenarios and/or measuring on real hardware, you will assess interference mitigation approaches with respect to their usefulness to accomplish the goal.

You will be working alongside NXP’s radar development team in Dresden, closely connected with local and remote NXP innovation teams. Scientific supervision will be provided by the Chair of Electronic Systems and Sensors at Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus–Senftenberg, Germany.

Key challenges to address include

1. Gaining a deep understanding of physical radar operation and the impact of interference

2. Defining and simulating critical multi-car, multi-radar scenarios

3. Exploiting and developing signal processing algorithms to mitigate the interference impact

4. Exploring methods to analyze and characterize the interference situation and adapt accordingly.

Educational Requirement:

  • Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields

  • Profound mathematical skills are a must

  • Experience in simulation for signal processing, image processing, and/or neural networks are desirable

  • Experience with MATLAB and/or Python will be helpful

Does this sound like an interesting challenge to you?
Please submit your CV and personal background and let us talk about it!

Please note: The successful candidate may/will be responsible for security related tasks. The assignment may/will be in scope of security certifications, therefore a conscious and reliable way of working is necessary.
