At Akron General, Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technicians are critical to the care of our patients as they assist Pharmacists with sterile compounding of IV medications. This team encourages growth and supports caregivers earning specialty certifications from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.   


A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 7:00am – 3:30pm or 3:00pm – 11:30pm. 


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Assist pharmacists in filling inpatient orders, documentation, monitoring stock for outdated medications and disposing of medications. 
  • Compound medications according to USP795 regulations.  
  • Perform sterile compounding in compliance with USP <795> regulations.  
  • Perform sterile compounding of hazardous medications according to USP <797> regulations. 
  • Prepare, deliver and collect all pharmacy items throughout the facility.  
  • Re-stock automated dispensing cabinets.  
  • Perform floor checks, stock checks and assigned unit reviews.  
  • Complete all Pharmacy Keeper activities and inspections. 
  • Prepackage medications.  
  • Answer the telephone and assist callers that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. 
  • Assist customers at the service window.  
  • Interact with Epic, our dispensing automation software (Pyxis and Carousels) and Pharmacy Keeper.  
  • Complete mandatory education and training to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.  ​


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • A high school diploma or GED  
  • Successful completion of a pharmacy department training program for Pharmacy Technicians including USP <797> sterile compounding competencies and hazardous drug compounding competencies  
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy  
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician verified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board  
  • Proficient typing skills  


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Associate’s degree or completion of college coursework  
  • Compound Sterile Preparation (CPhT-CSP) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board  
  • Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician  
  • Experience in a hospital inpatient pharmacy   
  • Experience in a USP797 compliant sterile products compounding room  
  • Experience with Epic electronic healthcare record or similar programs   
  • Experience with Pharmacy Keeper or another IV workflow software system  
  • Understanding of medical terminology and calculations     

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work which requires constant standing and walking.
  • Ability to routinely lift up to 20 pounds.
  • A willingness to perform work which has infrequent disagreeable features and safety hazards.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
