The Pharmacy Technician – Operating Room supports high-volume inpatient pharmacy operations at Main Campus, collaborating closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, leadership, and other clinical caregivers. This role assists with medication preparation, distribution, and operational workflows, including medication deliveries across hospital units, carousel operations, triaging phone calls and MAR messages, and supporting medication access for surgical and inpatient care teams. Technicians rotate through various pharmacy areas to build broad inpatient experience and, after completing training and demonstrating competency, may have opportunities to transition into other specialized pharmacy areas such as IV services, ambulatory pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, or home care, depending on departmental needs.

A caregiver in this position will rotate between day and evenings shifts Monday - Friday and rotate every 3rd weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.
  • Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.
  • Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.
  • Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • High School Diploma/GED 

Must meet all of the following license and certification combination requirements at the time of application:

  • Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR the National HealthCareer Association (NHA)
  • AND it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.  If certified but current status with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) is Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee it is required to update registration status to a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the OBOP within six months of hire.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Six months of hospital experience
  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
  • Prior inpatient hospital experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, walking, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing, and compounding.
