Summary of Job Duties:
Pharmacy Technician IV is an upper-level technician position in the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Service Line. The employee must demonstrate highly specialized skills and have knowledge of regulatory standards not required of other Pharmacy Technicians in the P&T Service Line. Any individual in this position must be eligible to be registered with the State Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician, and must have a thorough knowledge of health-system medication distribution processes. The Senior Pharmacy Technician for Controlled Substances performs a variety of non-professional functions and is responsible for the operation of a highly sensitive hospital-wide (inpatient and outpatient) narcotic drug control and distribution program. The employee applies knowledge of pharmacy practice, hospital policies/procedures, and regulatory standards involving controlled substances (e.g., Drug Enforcement Agency, Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy, The Joint Commission, etc.) to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. Judgment and skill are used to complete technical functions of the inpatient and outpatient controlled substances distribution system, including automated dispensing machines. The employee will perform duties in the narcotic vault which will involve making appropriate record entries, handling and distributing large volumes of controlled substances, assisting inspectors during inquiries, responding to questions by front-line hospital staff, and by reviewing usage records. The employee will also function as the key component of the UAMS drug diversion program by compiling and reviewing reports, documenting investigations, and following up on diversion inquiries. The employee is expected to maintain a high degree of accurate productivity and performance while being extremely sensitive to the specific contribution to total patient care.

5 years’ experience working in a hospital or retail setting as a pharmacy technician; experience working with controlled substances
Good math skills
National Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT).

Responsibilities:
Manages the controlled substance storage and distribution program in compliance with all federal and state laws regarding controlled substances.
Maintains accurate inventory of controlled medications across the hospital.
Runs and reviews narcotic compliance reports.
Maintains proper medication storage procedures, registries, and records for controlled medications.
Processes expired, damaged, and recalled pharmacy products.
Other duties as assigned.
