Job Summary: The Pharmacy Controlled Substance Technician is certified, highly specialized technician, under the Chief of Pharmacy Service, is responsible for the first line management of all controlled substances handled by the pharmacy as well as the management of all drugs handled by the pharmacy for the operating rooms, anesthesia areas, polytrauma rehabilitation (514) and SARRTP (507) for the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System..

Major Duties:

  • Duties to include but not limited to: Ability to prepare, fill, and dispense controlled substance according to policies and procedures Conducts regularly scheduled inventories biweekly and daily if needed according to regulations and policies Assists the Controlled Substance Compliance Inspectors to complete the monthly inspections Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdated CS medications from stock - including inpatient wards, inpatient/outpatient storage cabinets, vaults Works closely with OR/Anesthesia staff to assess needs of care areas to improve patient care and customer service as it relates to medication distribution Follows policies and procedures for handling the destruction and return of controlled substance medication. Assists, reviews, and makes recommendation in inventory control of controlled substances. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Grade Determinations: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. Narcotic/controlled substance experience Physical Requirements: The work requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times may be physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time. Must be able to adjust to changing environments. Must demonstrate the ability to stay on task, to multi-task, and to adapt to the speed of the workflow as required to provide the best customer service possible to the veterans and staff.
