PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

City of Aurora seeks a fitness guide for the recreation division 🧗. Personal training here is like being a custom tailor for health goals. Core 4 values of Integrity, Customer Service, Respect, and Professionalism anchor every session. Custom exercise programs for individuals and small groups keep the community moving. Client assessments provide the roadmap for better wellbeing. Clear communication with participants and the Fitness Specialist ensures smooth operations. Safety protocols involve overseeing equipment use and responding to emergencies with minor first aid. Inspiration and motivation act as the secret sauce for every successful workout. New fitness trends and certifications keep coaching skills sharp and relevant. Indoor facilities serve as the primary workspace, though outdoor outreach events occasionally require your energy. Routine tasks include moving up to 50 pounds and standing or walking frequently.

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. 

 

The hiring rate for this role is $30.00/hour.

Plan, design, and lead personal training clients through exercise for the City of Aurora’s recreation division.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for creating own exercise program based on needs of clients with varying levels of fitness on an individual basis and a small group setting
  • Conduct assessments and make recommendations for improvements to client health and wellbeing
  • Communicate effectively with client(s) and Fitness Specialist 
  • Possess knowledge of fitness equipment and appropriate use
  • Keep up with the new trends of fitness and remain current on certifications
  • Modify exercise plans based on needs, potential injuries or health issues
  • Oversee the use of fitness equipment to ensure clients exercise properly and safely
  • Perform minor first aid and respond to emergencies if needed
  • Effectively motivate participants and clients
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: High School Diploma; degree in Kinesiology or Sports Science preferred

Experience: At least 1 year of experience teaching fitness classes/personal training.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of diverse exercises and how to adjust plans according to each client’s needs
  • Ability to instruct and motivate people

Abilities: 

  • Instruct and motivate group fitness participants
  • Maintain a safe environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Teamwork

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor from accredited institution
  • CPR/AED certification

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds at a time
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • May require frequent pushing, pulling, bending and stooping.
  • Teaching of fitness classes as scheduled.

Work Environment:

Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions

Equipment Used:

Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the Library automated systems

This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Knowledge of fitness equipment and accessories.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
