Leidos is seeking a summer intern with a strong foundation in Computer Science, Data Science, or AI/ML to join our team in support of the SMIT contract—the Navy’s largest IT services program.
Under the Service Management, Integration, and Transport (SMIT) program, the Leidos team delivers the core backbone of the Navy–Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), including cybersecurity services, network operations, service desk modernization, and enterprise data transport. Our mission is to unify the Navy’s shore-based networks, modernize digital experiences, and elevate performance through data, automation, and AI-empowered workflows.
The successful candidate will support next-generation AI initiatives—building intelligent agents, improving insight pipelines, and helping transform how the Navy manages service levels, network health, and operational decision-making. This internship provides hands-on experience with applied AI inside one of the most complex IT ecosystems in the federal space.
Daily responsibilities and project work may include:
Contribute to the IT Service Management (ITSM) AI portfolio, including multi-agent orchestrators, automated insight engines, service-desk intelligence, and performance-management AI tools (e.g., HydraFlow, Medusa, SLR Insight Engine).
Assist in designing and refining AI agents that summarize, challenge, and improve operational insights from ITSM ticket data, network sensor data, and performance metrics.
Develop and evaluate prompt architectures, agent workflows, and orchestration patterns supporting automated analysis and reporting.
Prototype small AI workflows using Python, JavaScript, and vector databases; integrate with APIs such as Jira, Splunk, ServiceNow, Ask Sage, and Azure Data services.
Build lightweight UI components (Flask, React, or equivalent) to visualize insights or enable user interaction with AI tools.
Support creation of data pipelines that decode patterns, transform datasets, and feed AI components for trend analysis, forecasting, and anomaly detection.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues within AI workflows, including data ingestion, model behavior, prompt execution, and integration with enterprise systems.
Participate in Agile ceremonies, maintain Jira stories, refine acceptance criteria, and demonstrate working software to a geographically distributed team.
Assist in documenting processes, governance patterns, agent behaviors, prompt templates, and testing checklists for enterprise deployment.
Want hands-on experience building practical AI systems—not theoretical machine learning experiments.
Enjoy combining software engineering, automation, and applied reasoning.
Are energized by transforming large, real-world IT operations with intelligent workflows.
Want to work on high-impact projects used by Navy leadership and thousands of end-users.
Basic Qualifications
Pursuing a degree from an accredited college/university in software engineering or related field of study.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
US citizenship required.
