Your opportunity

At Mission Australia, we believe your journey gives you unique insight and empathy that can change lives. As a Peer Worker, you will walk alongside people facing challenges like those you’ve overcome; providing hope, practical support, and connection.

In these roles, you will use your understanding to help others navigate recovery, build independence, and reconnect with community. If you’re passionate about turning your experience into purpose, this is your chance to make a real difference.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide individualized support to clients to achieve recovery goals, including safety planning and care coordination.
  • Respond to referrals and assist with intake assessments and suitability evaluations.
  • Support clients through outreach and in-reach services in safe environments.
  • Promote wellbeing and recovery by modelling lived experience and safe storytelling.
  • Assist clients in transitioning to independence or other services, connecting them with community resources.
  • Contribute to group programs and team forums to improve service delivery and outcomes.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as case files, reports, and data entry in line with Mission Australia protocols.

Requirements for success

  • Certificate IV or higher in Peer Work (or equivalent qualification/experience acceptable to Mission Australia).
  • Demonstrated lived experience of suicidal crisis or caring for someone in crisis, or bereavement from suicide.
  • Current valid WWCC, First Aid & CPR and a driver’s licence are essential to the role
  • Experience collaborating with mental health and/or community services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport and maintain relationships.
  • Sound understanding of mental health, suicidality, recovery-oriented practice, and psycho-social rehabilitation.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work within a recovery and lived expertise framework.
  • Proficiency in administrative tasks and computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and client management systems.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
