Job Description:

Summary:

The main responsibilities of a SIS Peer Advisor include but are not limited to advising students on course selection, university requirements, and exploring thematic and regional areas. Peer Advisors also assist in pre-registration activities including Express Advising, workshops, curriculum overview and planning, and campus outreach. Peer Advisors assist students on an appointment and Express Advising basis.  Peer Advisors may also be asked to participate in SIS and recruitment events.   

Essential Functions:

  • Advise students on course selection, university requirements, and exploring thematic and regional areas.

  • Assist in pre-registration activities.

  • Assist students on an appointment and Express Advising basis.

  • Perform other duties assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 5 - 7 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $17.95 - $18.20 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • To be eligible for the position you must, at the time of application have successfully completed SISU 306 or equivalent (may be in progress at time of application).

  • Have past leadership experience and/or an interest in counseling and advising your peers.

  • Be available for a weekly staff meeting, 30 minutes per week.  

  • Have 5 - 7 hours per week availability to work during the academic year.

  • Be able to commit to the role through the end of the academic year. 

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student confidentiality and ability to uphold federal guidelines.  

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Involvement in AU campus life and knowledge of campus resources and activities.

  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-directed.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with public speaking and small group facilitation.

  • Strong communication and listening skills.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Time Commitment: Peer Advisors work 5 - 7 hours per week during the academic year. Most hours are between M - F 9 - 5 PM based on what works with your class schedule. Some evening events may be required. Weekly staff meetings are required. This hour is included in the weekly hours count. Peer Advisors are expected to commit to the full academic year.

  • Training: Peer Advisors are required to attend a two-day training session with dates to be determined. Additionally, Peer Advisors must complete 6 hours of advisor shadowing within the SIS Advising Office before they will be permitted to meet with students. On-the-job training will continue throughout the year.
