About This Opportunity  

The Payroll & Benefits Officer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accurate, timely and compliant delivery of payroll and employee benefits services across the University. Working within a high-volume, service-oriented environment, this role is responsible for the end-to-end processing and administration of payroll transactions, salary packaging, superannuation and related employee benefits, supporting the integrity of the University’s fortnightly pay cycle.

This role provides expert guidance on payroll and benefits enquiries, undertakes detailed analysis and reconciliation of payroll data, and proactively troubleshoots or escalates complex issues to ensure risks are identified and resolved. In doing so, the role contributes to strong governance, audit compliance and continuous improvement of payroll processes and service delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional to apply their technical expertise in a large, complex organisation, while working collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver accurate outcomes and a high standard of client service that directly supports the University’s staff and broader organisational objectives. 

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Deliver accurate and timely payroll services by processing, reviewing and approving payroll transactions, adjustments, terminations, overtime and advance payments in accordance with legislative, policy and enterprise agreement requirements.

  • Administer and support employee benefits, including superannuation and salary packaging, providing accurate advice to staff and ensuring correct payroll deductions, reconciliations and reporting through the University’s HRIS.

  • Ensure payroll data integrity, compliance and audit readiness through detailed analysis, validation and reconciliation of payroll and general ledger data, including Single Touch Payroll and Fringe Benefits Tax reporting.

  • Identify, troubleshoot and resolve complex payroll and transactional issues, contributing to continuous improvement of payroll processes, standard operating procedures and quality assurance practices.

About You

  • Completion of a relevant degree with subsequent experience in payroll, superannuation and/or salary packaging administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll, superannuation and taxation requirements, supported by strong analytical skills and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Proven experience working with large-scale HR and payroll enterprise systems, with the ability to efficiently manage and interpret complex data sets.

  • Well-developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgement to resolve a broad range of transactional issues in line with policy, legislation and enterprise agreements.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and client service capability, with a collaborative approach to providing clear, timely and professional advice and support.

  • Highly organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet strict deadlines and take accountability for high-quality service delivery within a team environment.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia and a criminal check.
