Patient Unit Coordinator
Who We Are:
Elliot Health System is excited to share the opening of a new Adult Stepdown Unit (ASDU). It is a 12-bed unit with private rooms incorporating aspects from our Intensive Care Unit that improve nursing satisfaction such as: ceiling lifts to assist with safe patient movement and supply carts in every room to streamline care. The unit will have substantial telemetry monitoring and a medication room to promote safe patient care.
About the Job:
Under the supervision of an RN, performs a variety of clerical duties on patient units, including filing, transcribing, charting, sorting patient information, acting as receptionist, receiving and directing visitors, and answering the phone, etc.
What You’ll Do:
- Contributes to ensuring effective and efficient communication with visitors, callers, physicians, staff from other departments and others as appropriate. Meets and greets visitors to the department; determines the purpose of visit and responds or refers to appropriate staff member. Answers and screens incoming phone calls to the department; responds to inquiries or refers to appropriate staff member. Pages/locates department staff at the request of physicians and others. Contacts vendors to arrange for brace fittings and other patient care-related activities as appropriate. Updates and maintains patient assignment board, Census Change Sheets, and all other patient lists.
- 2. Supports effective and efficient patient care processes through timely, accurate transcription and entry of orders/data. Transcribes physician orders, which are verified by the registered nurse, to appropriate patient care documents. Records vital signs from the Vitals Sheet onto appropriate document in medical record. Enters orders for laboratory and diagnostic tests via computer; communicates with other departments as necessary to coordinate testing. Ensures that patient charges for laboratory tests and observation are entered via computer on a daily basis. Maintains manual processes including admission, discharge, transfer and order entry during periods of computer downtime.
- 3. Ensures integrity, completeness and proper organization of medical record, within scope of job description. Assembles patient charts for all admissions to the unit. Maintains adequate supply of charting materials including progress notes physician order sheets in each patient record. Files laboratory results, x-ray reports and other documents in the patient record upon receipt. Prepares patient charts for patient transfers by copying and organizing required documents according to specific payer criteria. Disassembles and reorganizes chart upon discharge before forwarding to Medical Records. Coordinates completion of patient death certificates by contacting appropriate parties.
- 4. Supports the smooth functioning of the unit by performing a variety of clerical and coordinating activities as designated by the unit. Maintains adequate unit-established supply levels; orders supplies to ensure timely delivery to the unit. Updates and maintains the daily key and beeper list for the unit; ensures that all RNs receive keys and beepers at the beginning of the shift and return them at the end of the shift. Assists the department director with specific projects as assigned (i.e. weekly payroll, updating resource manuals, etc.).
- 5. Ensures a professional, respectful and effective patient care and working environment through consistent use of appropriate interpersonal and communication skills. Interacts with patients, coworkers and staff from other disciplines/departments in a manner which respects dignity and individuality. Functions as an integral member of the operating room team; demonstrates initiative and willingness to assist others in order to meet desired outcomes. Demonstrates customer relations skills which promote a positive image of the department. Maintains confidentiality of all patient, coworker and Elliot Hospital information as appropriate.
Who You Are:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: None required.
- Certification/Licensure: Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) certification preferred.
- Software/Hardware: MS Office
