Under the direction and supervision of a licensed clinician the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will assist with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: (None)

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified in Basic Life Support or Heartsaver CPR with AED within 90 days of employment, and

  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Health, preferred or

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program (Certification or Registration), preferred or

  • In the Emergency Department only, no experience if graduate from EMT (Basic or Intermediate Level) or Paramedic Program

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Prior patient care experience or in lieu of experience a certification.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

  • Obtain pre and post treatment vitals, weight and vascular access condition. Report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.

  • Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including vital signs, treatment parameters, and change in condition.

  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.

  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed.

  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; and participates in organizational departments safety programs; adheres to all MH policies and procedures.

  • Integrate into unit based team and participates in professional governance opportunities as appropriate.

  • Helps orient new employees as appropriate.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards of providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and our workforce.
