Job Summary:

Under general direction, assists the pathologists in preparing and grossing anatomical specimens for routine histology testing and staining.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assigns priorities and batches of the specimens.
  • Trims, labels, processes and preserves specimens.
  • Provides gross dictation of surgical tissue specimens under direct supervision of surgical pathologist.
  • Reviews gross dictation and slides prior to giving slides to the pathologist.
  • Disposes of surgical tissue when appropriate.
  • Prepares and maintains surgical tissues by properly registering accessioning, labeling and ensuring adequate fixation.
  • Prepares frozen sections by labeling, cutting, staining and preserving the specimens.
  • Photographs specimens as needed.
  • Assists the Radiologist and Pathologist in collection of fine needle aspirate specimens.
  • Assures that working supplies are adequate.
  • Files, rotates and transfers surgical slides and paraffin blocks.
  • May perform administrative and clerical duties as needed.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on courses in anatomy and physiology or equivalent years of experience and education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
