The Louisiana State University (LSU) College of Science and the Department of Physics and Astronomy seek to hire a part-time instructor to teach undergraduate classes in algebra-based or calculus-based physics and/or astronomy. We anticipate hiring as soon as the Spring 2026 semester.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a dynamic, innovative department on the beautiful LSU campus in Baton Rouge with modern teaching and research facilities. Our faculty and students conduct internationally recognized research in Astrophysics, Atomic Physics and Quantum Optics, Condensed Matter Physics of Quantum Materials, Gravitational Physics and General Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, as well as Medical Physics.
Responsibilities: Part-time instructors normally teach one to three courses per semester and paid per course. However, one course may be replaced with equivalent number of hours of department service if approved by the department. While the primary teaching duties will be introductory algebra based physics or calculus based physics and/or astronomy classes, an instructor may also be assigned to teach other introductory classes in physical science. On occasion, this instructor may teach upper level undergraduate majors courses in physics or astronomy if the applicant has a Ph.D. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to creating and maintaining course syllabi's, meeting with classes during assigned times, delivering the course curriculum, developing and grading assignments, hold office hours, reporting grades, and assessing student learning outcomes as outlined by the Chair and Associate Chair of the department. Salary will be based on the number/type of courses, which may vary from semester to semester.
Minimum qualifications: Master's in astronomy, physics or a closely related field.
Preferred qualifications: PhD in astronomy, physics or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with previous teaching experience.
