Position Summary / Career Interest:

Under the direct supervision and delegation of a Nurse and/or Provider, the ECC Paramedic is cross-trained in the role of Unit Secretary and Unit Assistant/Nurse Tech as well as duties/tasks within the organizations scope for the ECC Paramedic. Based on the needs of the department, responsibilities are a combination of providing direct patient care and technical assistance to the nurse and/or provider and performing a variety of computer, clerical, scheduling and supply functions necessary for the operation of the unit. The ECC Paramedic must have excellent communication skills. It is imperative that they are able to communicate effectively using tact and sensitivity. He/she must be self-motivated and able to work and make decisions with limited supervision, keeping others appropriately informed. It is important to have a strong knowledge of emergency procedures and be able to stay calm in stressful situations. The ECC Paramedic practices within the organizational/departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Consistently meets work schedule.
  • All other duties as assigned within the ECC Paramedic scope, as delegated by the provider or RN.
  • Assists the RN with ECC Triage.
  • Starts IVs and IO at the direction of the provider or delegated by the RN.
  • Administers medications at the direction of the provider or delegated by the RN.
  • Assists the provider with intubations at the providers direction.
  • Contributes to the plan of care under the direction of the nurse by following the patient safety goals of fall risk and skin monitoring. Reinforces selected patient teaching initiated by the nurse.
  • Makes rounds on patients and answer call lights immediately, using excellent customer service techniques.  Promptly reports any unusual incidents and/or any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to the appropriate staff person maintaining confidentiality.
  • Introduces self to patient and family upon arrival to room.  Communicates appropriate information to nurse and provider in a timely manner, i.e.,  physician phone calls, stat orders, critical results, patient needs, etc.
  • Uses technology appropriately, whether entering data or securing data from the computer  system.  Accurately enters orders and charges into the computer system as appropriate.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others.  Able to prioritize tasks.  Self motivated and able to make appropriate decisions regarding patient care.
  • Demonstrates flexibility required to meet changing priorities.
  • Maintains respectful working relationships with co-workers and encourages the team approach.
  • Approaches work in a manner that makes quality improvement a part of every activity.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • 1 or more years of previous healthcare experience

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associates Degree

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Licensed Paramedic - State Board of Emergency Medical Services upon Hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 180 Days
  • CPR/ AED/ BLS - Other BLS within 14 days
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 90 Days
