PURPOSE OF CONSULTANCY

This requisition is for a consultancy at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO).

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

The consultant will provide specialized technical support for PAHO’s Communicable Diseases Prevention, Control, and Elimination Department (CDE) during the period from February 1st to July 31st, 2026.

Please note that even the position is remote, but the consultant needs to be local, because eventually he/she will be required to be in person at the office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when necessary.

 

Purpose of Consultancy:

To deliver technical and coordination support for regional leishmaniasis and yaws activities, contributing to improved surveillance diagnosis and elimination processes in the Region.

The role focuses on consolidating and producing regional reports of the external quality assessment program for the microscopic diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis- PEED, strengthening surveillance processes as monitoring of leishmaniasis data in SisLeish, including updating, preparing entries, importing data related to dogs and vectors and reports for the WHO. Development of a proposal for a vulnerability index to determine areas at risk of yaws and complementary actions to advance the process of eliminating this disease in the Americas. The consultant will be responsible for producing three key deliveries:

1.     Regional consolidated technical report of 11º Cycle of PEED 2025 activities: A comprehensive report summarizing process, results and analysis of the 11º cycle of the external quality assessment program for the microscopic diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis conducted during 2025.

2.     Report on the proposal for a vulnerability index for occurrence of yaws: A report detailing the development of the proposal and methodology used to define the vulnerability index and determine areas at risk of yaws in the Americas, with the purpose of supporting countries in the process of surveillance and elimination of this disease.

3.     Updated regional information system of Leishmaniasis- SisLeish: A report synthesizing the support for development, coordinating and validate the process for include the news enter data of clinical outcome for leishmaniasis human cases, dogs, vectors, digital PEED and specific report for WHO in the SisLeish

Education:

  • Essential: Doctor, Veterinarian or Nurse from a recognized institution with advanced university degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related health discipline.

  • Desirable: master’s level or above in public health, epidemiology, or a related health discipline.

 

Experience:

  • Essential: Minimum 10 years of combined national and international experience in NTD including leishmaniasis and yaws.

  • Desirable: Experience with PAHO/WHO, UN agencies, ministries of health, or international partners.

Technical knowledge/skills:

  • Epidemiological analysis and surveillance systems

  • Support in the development of actions to advance the surveillance, control and elimination of diseases covered by this contract.

  • Programmatic coordination and reporting

  • Strong analytical and communication skills
