Packaging Engineer

Are you energized by a packaging technology role that allows you to enhance your project management skills in a state-of-the-art production environment?  If so, this Packaging Engineer role could be an exciting opportunity to explore.

As a Packaging Engineer, you will be responsible for all pack design changes (New Product Introductions (NPIs), Product Transfers, and Site Changes) in support of pack changes and packaging supply goals for Haleon.

This role will provide you the opportunity to manage key activities to progress your career.

You will act as a technical lead for new packaging technologies, packaging materials, supplier change assessments and implementation. Supports Production and Engineering department by leading site input to package design. Acts as the “voice of packaging” for the site, supporting qualifications, de-risking projects, packaging issues, as well as continuous improvement. Masters the use of the appropriate tools (for ex. CH-Pack, M-ERP) to manage packaging components.

The responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Responsible for technical Pack Design (primary, secondary and tertiary) activities for global supply, including pack concept development for pack changes raised through service and transformation board direction support agile request (Global Pack Management/GPM System transactions)
  • Manage site projects (packaging equipment, value engineering, pack design change, material changes, etc.)
  • Execute/co-ordinate line trials on site with local resource
  • Create appropriate qualification plans for packaging material system development/qualification
  • Create and/or approve component specifications and drawings
  • Provide support for problem resolution involving packaging components at site (technical expertise and working with suppliers)
  • Create and maintain packaging component drawings, specifications, and Bills of Material by using  the appropriate tools (CHAMPS, CH-Pack, SAP and Veeva). ensures that appropriate supporting documentation (ex. technical data sheets, trials outputs) is present in the systems.
  • Document all necessary packaging qualification testing of packs and pack components required for Site,  Pack Standards, and Transformation activities
  • Contribute to site Change Controls to determine activities required with regards to packaging changes.
  • Provide technical support to assessment and qualification of component supplier-initiated changes to materials and/or manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct impact assessments pertaining to new packaging and packaging changes that may impact packaging processes, product stability and performance, consumer perception.
  • Actively participate as team member of NPI’s, Technology Transfer and all other projects related to the Product Portfolio.
  • Ensure local regulatory compliance (FDA, Health Canada, etc…) and legal compliance (CRSF, tamper evidence, weights and measures, etc…) for all new products and packaging at site, as well as for packaging changes.
  • Support Productions to manage and resolve issues, actively participates to continuous improvements initiatives.
  • Accountable for packaging process qualifications along with Engineering and Process Engineers.
  • Coordinate de-risking and business continuity projects related to packaging components, working closely with suppliers, Quality Supplier, Purchasing, Regulatory Compliance.
  • Accountable to support the supplier complaint process for packaging component issues. Works with Supplier Quality and suppliers to ensure supplier led investigations are conducted and satisfactory corrective and preventive action plans are agreed and progressed with the supplier’s site to address packaging component issues.
  • Author technical evaluations, technical documents, SOPs, reports, risk assessments, technical change controls and other site documentation.
  • Lead the resolution of packaging issues and risks that could result in negative business impact, drawing on best practice from the packaging community and Haleon company network of suppliers and external experts. Acts as a SME during investigations of process/packaging deviations to determine root cause/corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and leverages the use of shared materials and/or suppliers with other sites to maximize scale and efficiency as a business advantage.
  • Observe current regulations and company provisions on workplace safety and hygiene and the use of collective protective equipment and personal protective equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, or related Packaging Science
  • 5 or more years of experience in packaging
  • 2 or more years of experience in pharmaceutical packaging
  • Experience with packaging component materials and processes (blisters, bottles, tubes, sachet, vials etc.)
