Organizational Overview:

The Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate's vision is to provide best-in-class environment, safety, and health services delivered in ways that enable world leading science and operational excellence. The Waste Management and Work Control Division (WMWCD) within the ESH Directorate provides the management and transportation for Brookhaven National Laboratory’s (BNL) regulated waste streams and radiological material, along with managing the institutional programs for work control and conduct of operations.  Dedicated to upholding the laboratory’s core principles of safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

Position Description:

Responsible for work assignments for the Packaging and Transportation Group within the Waste Management and Work Control Division. Provide technical expertise to BNL in determining hazardous material shipping requirements and shipping radioactive materials. Ensure shipments made comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations (DOT), International Air Transport Association Regulations (IATA), and internal BNL requirements such as Standard Based Management System (SBMS) management systems, subject areas and Packaging and Transportation Group Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise and regulatory interpretation for shipping radioactive and hazardous materials.

  • Perform packaging and paperwork generation of radioactive materials for shipment.

  • Receive and inspect incoming radioactive material shipments from off-site locations.

  • Review shipping memo requests issued through the PeopleSoft system for all shipments from BNL.

  • Assist in the preparation of work control documentation, technical work documents, job safety analysis, and radiological work permit requests as necessary to ensure that adequate work controls are in place and adhered to for packaging and transportation activities.

  • Must be able to work under limited direction and as a team member under tight deadlines.

  • Manage customer expectations by looking for creative solutions to regulatory limitations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a BS degree in a related technical field and 2 years relevant work experience or;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a related technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years relevant experience or;

    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;

    • 8 years relevant work experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in chemical management/hazardous materials and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation.

  • Must have the ability to follow procedures and maintain all training and qualifications.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite; especially Outlook and Word.  

  • Requires material handling/lifting of up to 50 lbs.

  • The ability to communicate well in verbal and in written form

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 year relevant work experience or;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a related technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years relevant experience or;

    • 10 years relevant work experience or;

    • a BS degree in a related technical field and 4 years relevant work experience.

  • Regulatory understanding  of IATA regulations and ability to interpret and apply the requirements to shipment preparation.

  • Regulatory understanding  49 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) and ability to interpret and apply the requirements to shipment preparation.

  • Working knowledge of chemical hazards and interactions.

  • Working knowledge of radiological hazards and safe handling methods.

  • The ability to use radiation detection and survey instruments.

  • The ability to communicate well in verbal and in written form.

  • This is a fully on-site position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $80000 - $107000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
