Job Description:

The Orthoptist contributes to the organization by supporting the assessment and treatment of patients under the indirect supervision of an Ophthalmologist.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Under indirect supervision of an Ophthalmologist, evaluates patients with vision problems and eye abnormalities.
  • Performs technical workups, patient interviews and diagnostic testing and recommend treatment plans.
  • Provide non-surgical treatment of specific eye muscle disorders, e.g. amblyopia, convergence insufficiency, diplopia, and strabismus.
  • Prepare reports on patients and treatments while maintaining health records.
  • Complete extensive additional sensorimotor examinations on motility patients; performing tests such as Lancaster red-green evaluation, Hess screen, amblyoscope/synoptophore assessment and duction testing with arc perimeter.
  • Phone triage of patients needing eyeglass prescriptions and patient education.
  • Perform ocular motor and sensorimotor examinations on patients from internal and external referring ophthalmologists, giving possible diagnosis and recommendation treatment plans.
  • Assist with minor surgical in-office treatments such as botulinum toxin injections, adjustable sutures, and Tensilon tests. Assist at surgery when needed.
  • Performs manual kinetic and automated perimetry.
  • Maintaining and cleaning of all equipment being used.
  • Performs telehealth visits within their scope of responsibilities as previously outlined.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree and completion of a 2-year post-grad American Orthoptist Council approved program in Orthoptics required.

Experience: No experience required.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements: Certification as an Orthoptist from the American Orthoptic Council (AOC) preferred.
