Job Summary

This position is an operations‑focused technical role responsible for supporting day‑to‑day transport network activities, including scheduled and emergency maintenances, change execution, and continuous monitoring of all transport services. The engineer works within the Ciena 6500 Backbone Transport network, supporting a large‑scale fiber optic infrastructure. Responsibilities include monitoring network health, responding to alarms and incidents, creating/executing changes, and assisting with service restorations. The role requires a solid understanding of optical transport technologies, strong operational discipline, and the ability to troubleshoot and support complex transport systems in a production environment.

Job Description

Must Have Technical Skills: 

  • Experience with Network Health Monitoring: This role involves actively monitoring network health, including handling alarms, performing routine maintenance and maintaining security configurations. The Engineer will assist in troubleshooting down services in Ciena and Nokia environments. While addressing potential issues early to prevent outages and/or service disruptions. 

  • 2-3 years’ experience in Transport Engineering, Technician or Technical role supporting transport service deployment or operations and preferably of DWDM networks. 

  • Understanding of Ciena 6500 Photonic, OTN, Ethernet Networking and Data Communications (TCP/IP), RLS, Nokia PSS1830, NFMT 

  • Associates/bachelor’s in electrical engineering, Software Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science or related work experience 

 

Must Have Soft Skills:  

  • Team Collaboration: While this position does not require formal mentorship responsibilities, the Engineer will work closely with senior team members and contribute to the development of best practices by sharing insights and supporting team goals. 

  • Operational Support: Support of solving network disruption and managing with high-pressure situations, the Engineer will support decision-making processes and contribute to restoring network operations quickly and effectively. 

  • Ability to handle stressful situations during maintenance window activities and solve complex technical issues under the stress of time constraints. 

  • Self-Motivated, Team and Customer Focused. 

  • Excellent Customer Service interaction skills. 

  • Excellent Written and Verbal communications skills. 

Nice to Have Skills: 

  • Experienced professional in problem-solving, able to evaluate designs and circuit identification for complex troubleshooting. 

  • Ability to make timely and accurate assessments of complex situations. 

  • Layer 2 knowledge will be an advantage. 

 

Optical Transport Engineer Ticket examples: 

Incident Tickets: When service-impacting issues occur, we open incident tickets to track outages, alarms, degradations, and restoration efforts through resolution. 

Work Order Tasks: When physical or field work is required, we create work order tasks to coordinate dispatches, equipment checks, fiber validation, OTDR testing, and site-level support. 

Change Tickets: When planned or required maintenance is needed, we use change tickets to schedule approved work, document risk, define impact, and ensure proper communication before execution. 

Break/Fix Support: When hardware, fiber, or transport paths fail unexpectedly, we investigate the issue, engage the appropriate teams, and drive repair actions to restore service as quickly as possible. 

Required Maintenance: When network health or stability requires planned corrective action, we schedule maintenance windows to repair, replace, migrate, or optimize transport infrastructure. 

RMA Support: When equipment is confirmed or suspected to be faulty, we coordinate RMA support to replace failed optics, cards, modules, or other hardware components with vendor-approved replacements. 

Fiber Support: When fiber issues are suspected, we review light levels, span loss, alarms, and OTDR results to identify disturbances, degradations, or damage along the physical path. 

Hardware Support: When equipment alarms or failures occur, we validate shelf, card, optic, power, and module status to determine whether repair, reseat, replacement, or vendor escalation is needed. 

Vendor Coordination: When third-party support is required, we engage vendors for fiber repair, hardware replacement, maintenance updates, troubleshooting assistance, and restoration confirmation. 

Maintenance Validation: After work is completed, we verify alarms, light levels, circuit status, and service stability to confirm the maintenance was successful and no outstanding issues remain.

Compensation

Primary Location Pay Range: $78,505.90 - $117,758.85

This job can be performed in New Jersey with a Pay Range of $78,505.90 - $117,758.85
