Job Description:
Our Ottawa division is looking for an energetic student to apprentice as technical team member. The position is on the photonic design team responsible for development of optical technologies and the associated HW & SW for Viavi's fiberoptic lightwave test systems. The student will have opportunities to take part in the development of new, state-of-the-art products, help to make design decisions, and work with cutting edge technology in the fiber optics industry.

The successful candidate will have an excellent mix of abilities including good interpersonal skills, excellent team player, strong hands-on lab skills (or a desire for them!), programming & lab automation underscored by a strong work ethic.

We are looking to train and invest in a diligent & committed student who is willing to 'fit' and adapt to a variety of tasks. The team you will be joining is a small focused group of veteran designers who support a wide scope of photonic design challenges.

Responsibilities:
In this role there will be a definite dual focus of software and device physics. The task is evaluation and investigation of new technologies, algorithms and approaches driving innovation into Viavi.

Responsibilities include:

• Assist with optical and electrical systems design & integration
• Develop & execute test plans & designs needed for component and system characterization of optical instrumentation projects (see MAP platform)
• Develop test methods & procedures, and automation
• Develop test software and analysis subroutines
• Lead investigations, execute experiments and owning of outcomes

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to resolve complex issues by researching/analyzing to provide tactical advice
• Positive outlook & a passion for technologies & its challenges
• Understanding of optical phenomena such as lasing, optical cavities, interference, polarization, birefringence & the photoelectric effect
• Understanding & demonstrated skill in programming. Experience with some or all of MATLAB, python, LabVIEW, VB, C#, Opensource
• Team player with strong verbal and written skills
• Ability to multitask & collaborate closely on a team
• Demonstrated accountability
• Some familiarity w/ lab equipment, such as lasers, filters, fiberoptics, oscilloscopes, breadboarding & electrical prototyping, would be an asset
