The Baker City Saint Alphonsus General Surgery clinic is now hiring for a PRN Ophthalmic Technician to support a Surgical Ophthalmologist a couple days a month!
This Ophthalmic Technician position will be an assistant to a surgical ophthalmologist who will see patients up to twice a month.
This position may be tasked with both clinical and administrative works in order to prepare patients for an eye examination as well as vision therapy.

This position may be tasked with both clinical and administrative works in order to prepare patients for an eye examination as well as vision therapy.
Administrative duties may include preparing correspondence, scheduling appointments, and documenting case preliminary history.
Clinical duties may include testing patients for depth and color perception, acuity for either near and far, macular integrity and visual field.
Administer and record specified topical and oral medications at the direction of the optometrist, exam written eyeglass prescription to determine lens specification, and verification of proper lens specifications after orders are received.
Optometric assistant is responsible for cleaning instruments, maintaining and controlling inventory and assisting in modification of eyeglasses.
Explain procedures to patients and family members per provider’s instructions.
Aids in identifying methods of improving patient care.
Assists in emergency situations under the direction of the provider, RN, or LPN.
Observes aseptic techniques, Universal Precautions, and other regulatory mandate, i.e. OSHA, CLIA, CMS, Joint Commission, etc.
Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and business functions of the organization, i.e. HIPAA.
Additional responsibilities include educating the patient with proper eye care, care of eyeglasses, repairing and adjusting eyeglasses and assisting clients with selection of frames.
Apply ethical principles as they pertain to optometric practice, including maintaining confidentiality and applicable ethical and legal standards.
An ideal candidate will have:
Good communication skills, good listening skills, and a non-judgmental attitude.
Proficiency in the use of ophthalmic instruments, equipment, and materials.
Should be knowledgeable of appropriate ophthalmic terminology; and in preparing and updating client electronic health records.
Must be able to recognize significant changes in the physical status of clients by observing the effects of eye dilation, and able to alert the optometrist of possible problem areas.
This position will work at least twice a month, during the work week.
Orientation and training will be virtual, but will be two to three days a week for the first two weeks.

A high school diploma or G.E.D. required. Ophthalmic Assistant Certification required.
At least one year experience in assisting an optometrist in the provision of comprehensive optometric services.
Must have active driving privileges. If, during the course of employment, driving privileges change or colleague receives a driving citation, the colleague is required to notify their supervisor and/or HR.
