PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating, through its subsidiaries, oil refineries and related facilities. We are a growing organization seeking talented Operator Trainee Candidates to join our team as a pivotal member here at PBF Energy. This role is located at Chalmette Refinery in Chalmette, LA.

JOB SUMMARY 

The Operator Trainee Candidate is responsible for the safe, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of refinery process units and associated equipment. This role includes conducting routine surveillance rounds, monitoring operating conditions, identifying and mitigating abnormal situations, and ensuring adherence to safety, environmental, and operating procedures. The Process Operator must maintain clear, timely, and effective communication with fellow operators, console personnel, and supervision to ensure safe and coordinated unit operations.

Onsite operator training is available to successful candidates.  People from various work backgrounds can do equally well in the Operations Department if they have the technical interest, work ethic, integrity, and initiative required to join our organization.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES                                        

  • Serve as the primary process contact for the assigned unit and maintain thorough knowledge of process flow, associated chemistry, major equipment line-ups, and unit safety systems including isolation points.

  • Monitor and control process variables (pressure, temperature, flow, levels, vibration, pH, differential pressure, chemical injection rates, catalyst performance, etc.) to maintain safe, stable, and optimized operations within defined operating envelopes.

  • Review computer data, schematics, and monitoring systems to evaluate performance and ensure process optimization.

  • Perform routine surveillance rounds and detailed inspections of field equipment (pumps, compressors, towers, tanks, furnaces, valves, instrumentation, and associated systems), mechanical issues, abnormal conditions, freezing, overheating, or equipment degradation.

  • Conduct furnace inspections including flame pattern observation, header pressures, fuel gas consumption, and identification of hot spots or combustion concerns.

  • Adjust local operating parameters and verify proper valve alignment, including control valve and bypass positions, to maintain product quality and safe operation.

  • Perform gas testing and issue Safe Work Permits, ensuring a high level of awareness of operating conditions and chemical, personnel, and process safety risks prior to maintenance activities.

  • Conduct sampling activities, observe and analyze results or submit to the lab, and report product quality concerns or deviations.

  • Ensure environmental compliance by minimizing emissions, preventing product loss, properly managing venting and draining activities, and operating air emissions sources using best practices.

  • Perform basic equipment maintenance such as lubrication, tightening packing, replacing filters and steam traps, clearing equipment, and maintaining proper lubrication systems.

  • Monitor equipment using handheld electronic test instruments and computer-based monitoring systems.

  • Inspect and verify operability of safety equipment including relief valves, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, breathing apparatus, and related protective systems.

  • Perform seasonal equipment preparation including winterization and summarization to maximize equipment reliability and efficiency.

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards to ensure a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

  • Accurately document operating conditions, abnormal events, incomplete work, and equipment status in logbooks and electronic systems.

  • Communicate effectively and proactively with the Process Team Lead, console operators, Shift Superintendents, maintenance personnel, and relief operators regarding unit status, operating constraints, safety concerns, and required adjustments.

  • Provide clear and thorough shift handovers to ensure continuity of safe and efficient operations.

  • Assist in training and mentoring new or transitioning operators.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

                                                                                 

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

  • Process Technology Degree OR demonstrated equivalent experience in refining, manufacturing, military or technical fields OR Bachelor's Degree required

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license

  • Must be eligible to qualify for a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC card)

  • Must be willing to perform/comply with the following:

    • Climbing ladders, stairs, and structures up to 200 feet in height.

    • Working a 12-hour rotating shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as required to support operational needs.

    • May be required to adjust schedules or provide unit coverage with short notice to support operational needs.

    • May be required to remain on-site or report to work during severe weather events, emergency situations, or other operational disruptions to support safe and continuous facility operations.

    • Entering and working in enclosed/confined spaces, such as tanks, vessels, and pits.

    • Working near large, high temperature, and high-speed equipment.

    • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

    • Working around chemicals, including acids and bases.

    • Wearing fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed shoes, ear and eye protection).

    • Performing job duties outdoors in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, rain, and other severe weather conditions.

    • Reading, understanding, and following technical procedures, safety policies, and operational documents written in English.

    • Learning computer software associated with process operations and reporting.
