Description:

The Operator Master is the expert level classification in the Equipment Operator series.


The Equipment Operator Master performs mastery duties and demonstrates expert operation of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of county roads and right-of-ways. Operates medium and heavy equipment, such as skid steer, motor grader, dozer, excavator, backhoe, front end loader, tandem-axel trucks, tractor-trailer or truck and trailer combination. Duties vary by district and may include operation of equipment in the preparation of final asphalt overlay, hauling materials, and assisting in graveling roads, shoveling, raking, sweeping, traffic control, and snow and ice control. Assist with manual labor for asphalt roads, gravel roads, and culvert maintenance, repair and construction. Act as a lead worker/operator for small field crews when assigned.

SCHEDULE:

This position is a full-time role typically working four 10-hour shifts during the summer, and five 8-hour shifts during winter. Please note there are positions available at both the Evergreen & Shaffers Crossing shop.

COMPENSATION:

Hiring Range: $39.44 – $47.32 USD Hourly

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

We offer an additional $2.50/hour Remote Location Differential to all employees who work at our mountain shops (Shaffer’s, Critchell, Evergreen, Lookout Mtn., Indian Hills, Coal Creek).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform road maintenance operations including storm pipe and bridge construction, repairing concrete, maintaining gutters and drainage, gravel road maintenance, and removal of snow from county-maintained roadways.
  • Read and understand blueprints and stake grades from blueprints.
  • Safely operate and/or drive heavy equipment including, but not limited to excavators, front end loaders, dozer, skid steer loaders, backhoes, motor graders, single and tandem axle dump trucks, and crack seal machines while performing construction, maintenance, and other work. Determine the most efficient equipment to utilize to meet project objectives.
  • Ensure roads are clear during snow events performing snow and ice control and sweeping operations.
  • Operate a water truck, plow truck, and other specialized heavy equipment in preparation of construction and maintenance operations.
  • Perform equipment and vehicle pre/post-trip inspections as defined by federal guidelines, and inspect other items affecting safe operations. Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance, as necessary.
  • Inspect and prepare all equipment for use by performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment, including fueling, lubricating, cleaning, and changing tires. Plan and request maintenance service and repair for specific equipment. Prepare equipment for specific uses by making necessary modifications.
  • Report incidents, accidents, traffic violations, damage to equipment, vehicles, and utilities.
  • Must adhere to all relative policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the various components of the Road & Bridge Safety Management Program are adhered to including the proper use of PPE. Ensure a safe environment consistent with regulatory and organizational requirements and needs.
  • Perform other duties, including flagging and setting up traffic control devices to ensure work zone requirements are met.
  • Keep time, activity, mileage records, and logs.  
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and report to an assigned shop within one hour of being called.
  • Responsible for assisting with the basic development and training of fellow employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned at varying locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of work-related experience in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years old by hire date.
  • Valid Driver’s License for 2 consecutive years prior to hire date. If from out of state, must obtain a Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement and Air Brake restriction removed as well as a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 12 months of hire. Employment is contingent on meeting all applicable CDL, DOT, and FMCSA requirements.  
  • May be required to obtain Flagger, Traffic Control Supervisor, Stormwater Management, and/or Erosion Control certifications. May be required to obtain a Class A CDL or a Hazmat endorsement.
  • Respond to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and report to an assigned shop within one hour of being called. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Industry-specific Knowledge:

  • Experience with road construction or maintenance.
  • Experience with asphalt operations.
  • Experience with public works.
