Operations Supervisor

Position Summary

GFL Environmental operates a hazardous and non-hazardous waste processing facility in Surrey, BC. Our treatment processes include industrial wastewater treatment, solids and liquids dewatering, hydrocarbon treatment, and contaminated solids processing.

The Operations Supervisor plays a key leadership role in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant facility operations. This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day activities, optimizing processes, coordinating resources, and supporting a high-performing operations team. The role is critical in maintaining safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and model GFL’s safety culture by leading through action and enforcing all Safety Policies and procedures.

  • Participate in the development, revision, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Task Hazard Analyses (THAs).

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate workplace hazards and unsafe conditions.

  • Ensure staff are using proper tools, equipment, and PPE safely and effectively.

  • Oversee daily facility operations to ensure efficient throughput and production targets are met.

  • Monitor operational performance, adjust workflows, and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Collaborate with the Technical Manager to troubleshoot difficult waste streams and support new treatment processes.

  • Review waste receipt tickets for accuracy and manage inbound/outbound waste inventory levels.

  • Ensure operational compliance with applicable environmental, municipal, and facility regulations.

  • Support audits, inspections, and reporting as required.

  • Supervise operations staff, providing coaching, training, and performance evaluations.

  • Support a positive, safety-focused team environment.

  • Oversee equipment reliability, maintenance scheduling, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.

  • Ensure equipment is operated safely, properly, and efficiently.

  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; post-secondary education in operations management, engineering, or a mechanical trade preferred.

  • Proven experience in a production or operations leadership role required.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract required.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and solid understanding of process operations.

  • Flexible availability, with the ability to respond to on-call and emergency situations as needed.

  • Background in wastewater treatment, dewatering, rotating equipment, or hazardous waste processing preferred.

  • Knowledge of chemical handling or basic chemistry is a strong asset.

  • Experience in Oil & Gas or industrial processing is considered an asset.

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace is an asset.
