Job Description
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is the world leader in serving science, with annual revenue over $40 billion. Our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Whether our customers are accelerating life sciences research, solving sophisticated analytical challenges, increasing efficiency in their laboratories, improving patient health through diagnostics or the development and manufacture of life-changing therapies, we are here to support them.
The Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) enables customers to find meaningful answers that accelerate breakthrough discoveries and ultimately change the world. We design, manufacture, and support high-performance microscopy and spectroscopy solutions at micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. Our global Electron Microscopy teams combine hardware, software, and application expertise to support customers across a wide range of industries.
About the role
As an Operations Engineer, you support the manufacturing of high-end Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM), ensuring systems meet performance and quality standards throughout the production process.
Your focus lies in resolving complex technical issues that arise during production, particularly in the final system validation stages close to shipment. In this phase, system performance is verified against strict requirements, often under time pressure and with direct impact on delivery timelines.
You operate at the interface of Manufacturing, R&D, Quality, and other internal stakeholders, addressing a wide range of technical challenges. This includes working in a dynamic manufacturing environment with a broad variety of technical challenges, requiring a pragmatic approach, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
This role is positioned within sustaining engineering, meaning your primary focus is on supporting and stabilizing existing products in manufacturing. You contribute to New Product Introduction (NPI) activities as a Subject Matter Expert, but do not carry project ownership.
In addition to the core responsibilities, you will also support the integration and troubleshooting of specialized modules (such as Energy Filters/EELS), working closely with domain experts.
Responsibilities
Factory support & troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to the factory for production and quality-related issues, including escalation handling in final system validation and performance testing stages
- Analyze and resolve complex system-level problems, often under time pressure close to shipment
- Identify structural or recurring issues and initiate improvements within own domain
- Ensure systems meet defined specifications and performance requirements
- Support troubleshooting on specialized modules (e.g. Energy Filter / EELS) in collaboration with domain experts
Build / install / upgrade support
- Support factory and field service engineers during system and module builds, installations, and upgrades
- Ensure systems are correctly built, installed, and functioning according to specifications
- Provide hands-on technical support and issue resolution during these activities
- Support integration and initial setup of specialized modules where applicable
NPI & improvement projects (support only)
- Contribute to New Product Introduction (NPI) projects as Subject Matter Expert (SME), without leading responsibilities
- Participate in structured improvement initiatives within the manufacturing environment
- Support the introduction and stabilization of specialized modules in production
Processes & documentation
- Create and maintain work instructions and process descriptions
- Define and improve factory process flows for consistent and efficient execution
- Document technical solutions, findings, and changes in a structured manner
- Leverage digital tools and data-driven approaches, including AI where applicable, to improve efficiency and knowledge capture
Hands-on engineering
- Perform hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of systems and modules
- Execute technical adjustments and alignments to ensure proper system functionality
- Support validation and verification activities, including during final system testing phases
- Train and support operators or technicians where required
- Take a pragmatic, hands-on approach to resolving technical issues
Supplier-related support (limited scope)
- Provide technical input on supplier-related issues via internal stakeholders
Engineering changes (ECOs)
- Initiate and implement engineering changes (e.g. ECOs) for systems and modules in production
- Ensure changes are validated and aligned with manufacturing and quality requirements
- Contribute to improvements in quality, manufacturability, and cost
How will you get there?
