The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an open clinical track faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for a position in Equine Surgery.

Position Overview

The Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences invites applications for a full-time clinical-track faculty position in Equine Surgery. Applicants must have a commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Specialty certification or eligibility for certification by the ACVS or ECVS is required.

A strong and varied caseload catering to a mix of equine disciplines is coupled with a collaborative environment within the Galbreath Equine Center. Clinical responsibilities will include coverage of general elective surgery as well as daytime and after-hours emergencies and surgery shared with other faculty.  Clinical-track candidates will be assigned approximately 65% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents. The service is dedicated to facilitating growth of the successful candidate’s specific interests. Teaching responsibilities will include lectures, labs, and clinical teaching of equine surgery to professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Sponsored research is not required for clinical track faculty, yet clinical research, publications or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected and encouraged.

Every faculty member is expected to participate in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development. There is a mentoring program for new faculty members to support their academic development as teachers and investigators. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to integrate into the College’s signature programs (https://vet.osu.edu/research/signature-programs) for collaborative research within the college, Center for Clinical and Translational Science (https://ctsi.osu.edu) and Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Two shared resources provide extensive support for research; the Blue Buffalo Clinical Trials Office/Biospecimen Repository, also known as the Veterinary Clinical Research Support Shared Resource (VCRSSR, supported by the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences) and the Comparative Pathology and Mouse Phenotyping Shared Resource (CPMPSR). Opportunities also exist for faculty to develop collaborative research with scientists in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences supports a faculty of over 75 clinical specialists, educators, and investigators along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The Equine Surgery service (https://vmc.vet.osu.edu/services?service_type=equine) is located within the Galbreath Equine Center with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including a 12,000 sq. ft. equine performance arena, digital radiography, ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, 128-slice CT, a 3 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, an interventional radiology suite, electrochemotherapy unit, locking compression plates, arthroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy, standing surgery rooms, three surgery suites, and in-house farrier services. The successful candidate will join a distinguished equine surgery program that includes six ACVS diplomates and three ACVS surgery residents, as well as four ACVECC diplomates. In addition, equine internal medicine and ambulatory services are components of our integrated equine program. The equine services are supported by world-class ancillary services with dedicated large animal anesthesia and radiology technicians as well as a theriogenology service.

TEACHING DUTIES

• Clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of professional students, residents and interns in the Equine Surgery Service, in conjunction with the diagnosis and treatment of patients presented to The OSU Veterinary Medical Center. 

CLINICAL SERVICE AND OUTREACH DUTIES 

• All aspects of patient care associated with an Equine Surgery practice including: patient management, client care, communication with referring DVMs, consulting with colleagues, medical record keeping, professional development, and participation in public relations activities. 

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES 

• Use of scheduled off-clinic time for preparing teaching materials, conducting research, 

writing for publication, and other scholarly activities. 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS 

• Model and promote a culture of collegiality, professional citizenship, and collaboration in all academic endeavors to facilitate an excellent workplace atmosphere conducive to effective learning, scholarly achievement, and a high level of job satisfaction.

Education and Experience Requirements

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree. The candidate must have completed an ACVIM or ECVIM-Companion Animal residency and be board-certified or board-eligible. An advanced degree or equivalent research experience is desirable for tenure-track candidates.
