Research Technician – Flu Biopharmaceutical Development (Flu‑BPD)

About the Role
The Research Technician role sits within the Flu Biopharmaceutical Development (Flu‑BPD) group, supporting both the Process Development and Analytical Development teams.
These teams are responsible for the development of candidate vaccine virus strains for the seasonal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). The role will be embedded within the customer team and work under the day‑to‑day operational direction of the customer area leads, supporting delivery of scientific and operational objectives.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early‑career scientist to gain hands‑on experience in analytical and process development within a regulated laboratory environment while contributing to vaccine development programmes.
Major Job Duties & Responsibilities
The Research Technician will perform standard and advanced laboratory activities within a defined scope of work and to agreed timelines, following approved procedures and documenting all work accurately.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Support Analytical Toolbox development activities, assisting projects across a range of analytical techniques
Support analytical and process development projects, including troubleshooting activities, under the guidance and supervision of more experienced scientists
Make detailed laboratory observations, analyse data, and interpret results
Present findings at internal meetings and support the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols
Ensure all activities align with site business objectives and meet required standards relating to documentation, housekeeping, SHE, timekeeping, budgets, and regulatory legislation
Support laboratory maintenance activities, including housekeeping self‑inspections, stock control, reorder scheduling, and communication with key suppliers
Ensure laboratory documentation is accurate, neat, timely, and compliant; assist in the review and approval of laboratory records as required
Qualifications
Minimum of a science degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, or another relevant scientific discipline
Knowledge & Experience
Ideally 1–2 years’ experience working in a laboratory environment
Experience working in accordance with Health & Safety regulations in a laboratory setting
Experience following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and working within regulated laboratory environments
Understanding of customer service principles, including Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Skills
Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly across all levels of the organisation
Proficiency in the use of IT equipment as part of daily work, including laptops and smartphones
Proficient in Microsoft O365 applications (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook)
Strong planning, organisation, and time‑management skills
High standard of written communication and documentation skills
Outstanding attention to detail
Ability to identify, implement, and share continuous improvements and innovations

Strong customer service focus with the ability to understand customer needs and manage expectations
