Responsible for assessing the psychosocial, social, cultural and/or financial needs that impact the health and recovery of both hematology and oncology patients. Utilizes advanced social work skills, counseling, and clinical knowledge in the assessment of oncology patients and their families’ needs. Responsible and accountable for coordination of services through an interdisciplinary process which provides a clinical and psychosocial approach through the continuum of care and balances individually identified patients and family needs with the most compassionate and effective utilization of resources.The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Provides a safe, supportive, non-judgmental, atmosphere for oncology patients and families to build a trusting relationship, assess psychosocial needs, and address issues identified in collaboration with the oncology patient to maintain or reach the patient’s optimal physical, emotional, and spiritual health
Identifies and addresses disease related distress to ensure counsel and education for adjustment and coping skills with a cancer diagnosis and accompanying treatment related needs
Provides clinical counseling, utilizing a variety of evidence-based approaches, adapted to patient’s individual needs for adjustment, anxiety, depression, grief, loss, anger management, non-compliance, life-impacting situations, and other identified issues related to the patients diagnosis of cancer
Provides education, crisis intervention and psychosocial support, identifying impending as well as actual crises and facilitates an effective plan of resolution or modality of support for patients receiving cancer care
Possesses knowledge of cancer diagnosis and treatment interventions and provides services in compliance with regulatory agencies requirements/standards
Seeks grants, networks and coordinates inside and outside the Health System to develop new resources and programs for oncology patients
Provides clinical supervision for individuals with master level degrees, staff with provisional licensure, and students as assigned

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field required
State licensure required OR candidates pending licensure will be considered with expectation for full state licensure within 3 years of hire date required
Membership with the Association of Oncology Social Work and Oncology Social Work Certification (OSW-C) required after 3 years post masters experience in Oncology Social Work
Previous experience is required
Experience in assessing, counseling, end of life care and working with families required
Oncology experience and 1 year previous experience in a health care setting working with interdisciplinary teams preferred
Positive interpersonal skills
Excellent communication, problem solving and negotiation skills
Familiarity with assessing, counseling, discussing grief, loss, and end of life care
Critical thinking skills
Ability to appropriately prioritize patient care, and prioritize other duties as assigned
Knowledge of Erickson's developmental model and be able to demonstrate age specific interventions
Knowledge and sensitivity to individuals’ psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs
Articulate orally and in written communication
Ability to make accommodation for literacy and comprehension levels
Ability to use own transportation to carry out duties away from the office
Visual acuity to see and read medical record documents, computer screens and computer printouts
Speech and auditory abilities are required to allow for effective communication
Ability to ambulate, climb stairs and push or pull wheelchair patients at times
Position may involve contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
