The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, in partnership with the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic, invites applicants for the part-time role of Occupational Therapist Preceptor (0.8 FTE). The initial appointment will be for a term of one (1) year with the possibility of reappointment. The job duties and qualifications are outlined below.
The salary will be commensurate with education preparation and experience, within the range of approximately $80,000 - $100,000 for 0.8 FTE. Job Summary
UBC Health is in the process of establishing the Centre for Innovation in Collaborative Health Education and Team-Based Care. The Centre will serve as a provincial hub, bringing together students, educators, healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients to advance the quality of healthcare delivery through innovations in interprofessional learning, team-based care, and research. A core component of the Centre will be a new, purpose-built interprofessional teaching clinic located in the Gateway South building on the UBC Vancouver Point Grey campus.
The Occupational Therapist Preceptor will play a crucial role in providing team-oriented clinical instruction, mentorship, evaluation and clinical supervision of learners in Occupational Therapy while supporting the continuity of occupational therapy care of patients within the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic. The individual will also mentor learners from other professions in a team-based primary care setting while working with the Gateway Clinic team to develop, implement and evaluate models of team-based education and care.
This role requires the incumbent to maintain a Clinical Faculty Appointment with the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and will work in-person on the UBC Point Grey Campus.
Organizational Structure
The Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic is a collaborative project across the health professions, facilitated by UBC Health within a centre for innovation in collaborative health education and team-based care. UBC’s School of Nursing is the administrative operator of the Gateway to Team-Based Care. The Occupational Therapist Preceptor, Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic is required to hold a Clinical Faculty appointment through the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (OSOT). The individual will report to the OSOT Department Head, and work closely with our Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for clinical supervision responsibilities, the Gateway Director of Care in relation to clinical care delivery and the Gateway Program Director for innovations in education and research supporting the advancement of collaborative health education and team-based care.
Roles and Responsibilities
Clinical Supervision
Supervise and observe Occupational Therapy and other Health Professional learners in providing clinical care to Gateway patients. Typically 2-6 students with each placement block (see fieldwork placement dates), including but not limited to:
Assess clients’ occupational performance issues and goals by conducting formal and informal assessments, utilizing an evidence-based approach to plan and implement goal-directed services and contribute to the development of the care plan
Plan occupational therapy services in collaboration with clients, caregivers, and other healthcare providers, establishing expected outcomes, prioritizing goals, providing continuity of care, coordinating ongoing care, support transitions and navigating services.
Develop, implement and evaluate diverse intervention approaches to promote, develop, or restore occupational potential, including independent living, group leadership and support for vocational goals.
Engage with educational resources and other healthcare professionals to support client success regarding rehabilitation and functional issues in various life domains.
Consulting, coordinating and referring to other team members, specialists or community organizations to support the patient and caregiver in multiple dimensions of their health and wellbeing.
Documenting care, keeping medical records using the clinic’s electronic medical record keeping system.
Working within their full scope and recognizing and addressing gaps in their knowledge to ensure safe, quality care.
Observe learners providing patient care including direct observation in the room or through video camera. Note: this is not for every patient encounter.
Role model person-centred care for learners by empowering patients and caregivers as experts in their own lives, prioritizing patient agency and advocating for patients and caregivers as equal team members and partners in care and education. Actively involve patients in clinical teaching and student learning (e.g. giving feedback to students on communication skills).
Provide student support, mentorship and training to learners from across the health professions. This may include providing feedback and preparing evaluations to learners regarding their patient care.
Clinical Care
When required due to learner availability and capacity, provide direct care to patients as outlined above
Integration and Innovation in Team-Based Education and Practice
Contribute to the development and innovation of interprofessional education and health care service delivery in a team-based primary care environment.
Collaborate with other members of the Department of OSOT as appropriate to support the advancement of team-based care innovation, through collaborative development, implementation and/or assessment of innovative practice models
Engage with the UBC OSOT department through participation in departmental meetings, scholar rounds and/or relevant committees, based on capacity and as determined by Gateway operations to support the incorporation of interprofessional education and team-based care into curriculum
Quality Improvement, Research and Evaluation
Develop insights from data and research to devise and propose meaningful changes for ongoing improvement of clinical teaching, learning and interprofessional practice and education.
Learn, adapt and utilize health and learning technologies (e.g. electronic health record, artificial intelligence) effectively in a rapidly changing health system and health professions education program.
Minimum Qualifications
Hold or be eligible to hold a UBC OSOT Clinical Faculty appointment
Hold an entry-to-practice degree in Occupational Therapy and active registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC) in good standing.
Individual must hold professional liability insurance.
Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical practice experience in a relevant practice area
Specific expertise in primary care or experience working in team-based care contexts
Experience as a clinical educator or preceptor in one-on-one or small group settings.
Demonstrate a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care.
Possess a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrate a strong foundation in key program concepts such as person-centred, team-based care, interprofessional education, shared decision-making and continuous quality improvement or approaches for integrating knowledge into practice.
Demonstrate knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice within a person-centred model of care.
Demonstrate knowledge of the determinants of health and health promotion and chronic disease management principles and practices.
Demonstrate knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners established by the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC).
Demonstrate a commitment to cultural humility, culturally safer practices, cultural responsiveness and lifelong learning by continuing to develop the technical, relational and professional skills needed now and in the future to support a diverse range learners and patients.
Demonstrate the ability to work in an educational environment supporting and enabling the success of learners (e.g. health professional students).
Demonstrate experience and interest in pursuing evaluation and research to advance collaborative health education and practice improvement. Demonstrates exceptional, culturally safe communication skills that support therapeutic relationships, clear documentation, collaborative team-based care, and psychologically safe environments for learners, patients and colleagues alike.
Additional post-graduate degree in a related discipline (e.g. education, leadership, or research) would be an asset
Familiarity with the UBC Master of Occupational Therapy program curriculum is desirable.
