We are seeking: Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator

Permanent Full-Time, Hybrid role

The Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator supports the planning, implementation, and monitoring of VHA Health and Safety Programs. This role plays a key part in fostering a strong safety culture through training development and coordination, occupational health and safety risk prevention initiatives, and monitoring of compliance with health and safety policies and procedures. Working collaboratively with VHA’s WSIB coordinator, this position contributes to incident reporting, supports supervisors in investigations, claim documentation, and return to work coordination while ensuring effective communication between employees, supervisors, internal and external stakeholders.

This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to engage proactively with front-line staff, supervisors, and committees to support a safe and healthy workplace.

This position falls within the Human Resources Department, and reports to VHA’s Supervisor, Occupational Health & Safety.

Key Areas of Accountability

The Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator is required to do the following tasks, but not limited to:

  • Recommend editions and maintenance of Health and Safety policies and procedures.

  • Conduct regular workplace safety inspections and audits across VHA offices to identify potential hazards.

  • Support Supervisors/Managers in Investigations of accidents and incidents, recommend corrective actions, and track follow-up procedures.

  • Maintain all safety-related documentation, including Joint Health and Safety Meetings, inspection logs, incident reports, and training records.

  • Monitor and interpret new developments in occupational health and safety best practices and guide implementation within VHA.

  • Participate in Return-to-Work initiatives including review of the WSIB report and developing return to work letters from time to time.

  • Guide and maintain a system of investigating, reporting, communication and resolution of workplace health and safety issues and hazards.

  • Provide training and guidance to line managers/supervisors in dealing with workplace health and safety incidents and reporting.

  • Maintain and deliver a schedule of required Health and safety workplace programs on an annual basis.

  • Develop and arrange for the delivery of training programs.

  • Provide guidance and support to all staff in the area of Occupational Health & Safety management.

  • Act as a resource and liaison to the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), management, employees, and external regulatory agencies to foster a strong safety culture across the organization.

  • Supports safe client care through the development of knowledge and skills in accordance with our principles of continuous quality improvement.

Key skills, experience and behaviors required for this position:

  • College or university diploma or degree in a Occupational Health and Safety or related field required.

  • Two to three years of previous experience in Occupational Health and Safety; experience in the healthcare sector is preferred.

  • Sound knowledge of return-to-work, modified work, and accommodation programs within a diverse and inclusive work environment.

  • Proven ability to exercise judgement, tact, and discretion in preparing, disclosing, and handling information of a confidential and/or sensitive nature. High attention to detail and excellent analytical skills to solution targeted.

  • Skills in counselling and supporting safe return to work.

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrating the highest of professional standards.

  • Strong relationship building skills to partner effectively with all stakeholders.

  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g., Human Rights Codes (HRC), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA), Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Infection Prevention and Control.

  • Demonstrated commitment to client and family centered care.

  • HRIS: Workday experience an asset.

  • Certification in JHSC (Part 1 and Part 2), CPR (First Aid) and other relevant medical training are assets.
