Akron General’s 52A Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in general surgeries, such as bariatric gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y, cholecystectomy, thyroidectomy, urostomy, and more. 52A is the primary trauma floor for patients not requiring intensive care, and these are high acuity patients coming from the PACU and ED who require close monitoring and mobilization. As a Nurse Technician on this team, you will support these populations through their recovery processes, offering support, guidance and compassion alongside your fellow dedicated Psychiatrists, Social Works, Therapists and other healthcare staff. Our team is a close-knit group of people that welcomes new caregivers with open arms. The team is like a second family. Caregivers are never alone; the team is always there supporting them and available to assist with any concerns/questions they may have. 

 

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts.  

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, such as checking vital signs and weight, assisting patients with personal care, performing patient transfers/transport, cleaning dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.   

  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.   

  • Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Nursing student in good standing in an accredited Nursing School Program OR an unlicensed graduate of an accredited Nursing School Program 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force rarely, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
