JOB DESCRIPTION:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Nursing Shift Supervisor provides leadership, oversight, and operational coordination of nursing and behavioral health staff during assigned shifts in the Walk-In Center/Crisis Stabilization Unit (WIC/CSU). This position ensures the delivery of safe, effective, trauma-informed care to individuals experiencing psychiatric or behavioral health crises. The Nursing Shift Supervisor acts as the on-site administrative and clinical leader, ensuring compliance with facility policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements while supporting a positive, recovery-oriented treatment environment.
This is a nighttime position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide on-shift supervision and direction to nursing staff to ensure quality and continuity of care.
- Coordinate patient assignments, staffing levels, and workflow to meet patient needs and unit acuity.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clinical decision-making and problem resolution during assigned shifts.
- Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback.
- Lead daily shift huddles to communicate priorities, safety concerns, and patient updates.
- Monitor patient care delivery to ensure adherence to individualized treatment plans and nursing best practices.
- Conduct and/or review nursing assessments, medication administration, and documentation for accuracy and timeliness.
- Assist staff with de-escalation and crisis intervention, including participation in emergency response and restraint procedures as needed.
- Ensure consistent implementation of trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care practices.
- Evaluate patient acuity and make staffing or resource adjustments accordingly.
- Ensure shift operations run efficiently and in accordance with policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Oversee and verify documentation, incident reporting, and medication management processes.
- Communicate critical updates, patient concerns, and staffing issues to the Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing.
- Participate in and support performance improvement initiatives, audits, and quality reviews.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CARF, state regulations)
- Facilitate effective communication between shifts through comprehensive handoff reporting.
- Promote a professional, respectful, and supportive team culture that prioritizes patient safety and staff well-being.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and policy review sessions.
- Assist with schedule management, staffing adjustments, and coverage coordination.
- Maintain working knowledge of all unit policies, ensuring staff compliance and understanding.
- Participate in the review and revision of nursing procedures and policy updates as assigned.
- Support new employee orientation and competency verification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Level
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN required).
Years of Experience
Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year in behavioral health, psychiatric, or crisis stabilization settings. Prior supervisory, charge nurse, or leadership experience required.
Certification/Licensure
Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Therapeutic Options required (or obtained within 90 days of hire). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee.
