Job Summary
Under general supervision the Nursing Research Scientist II will promote, support, and facilitate individuals engaging in research activities to advance evidence-based practice, the conduct of research, translation of research into practice, and the dissemination of research results. Conduct a clinical research needs assessment as indicated. Use results to construct a strategic plan to develop clinical research for nursing and other disciplines, aligned with the strategic mission and goals of the hospital. Provide leadership for research and evidence-based practice education to clinical staff, including both formal classes and informal sessions. Provide leadership for the planning and coordination of the research seminars. Identify opportunities and applies for research funding. Also assist departments and individual health care professionals to apply and obtain funding for research projects and activities. Foster the development of a practice environment conducive to the conduct of research and evidence-based practice. Participate in or lead collaborative multidisciplinary research and EBP projects. Mentor nurses and other health care professionals in the dissemination of research and EBP projects through poster presentations, podium presentations, state and national conferences.
Essential Functions:
- General Operations
• Contributes to the goals of the agency and specific units by participation in program planning and development (i.e.) research program development, education
• Assists in practice issue identification and developing research programs identified by PI, practice issue identification, and /or other mechanism (i.e. Quality Council, Peer Review, etc.)
• Effectively manages and implements rapidly changing research issues and processes.
• Collaborates in developing teaching strategies and programs for staff as applicable.
• Collaborates with all disciplines as appropriate in development, implementation and evaluation of research studies.
• Collaborates and/or coordinates with members of the health care team to ensure quality and continuity of care for complex care/multiple needs patients populations, addresses practice issues across care settings, as well as outcomes and cost. Identifies relevant research issues and implements change.
• Collaborates with Nursing Leadership and staff in the implementation of research initiatives within the context of other organization wide initiatives. (20%) - Research Compliance Oversight
• Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements and accreditation standards
• Ensures research administration activities are compliant with the funding agency, state, federal, statutory and regulatory standards
• Collaborates with all disciplines as appropriate in for compliance measures of research studies.
• Accountable for creating a culture of compliance, ethics and integrity.
• Responds appropriately, including required reporting, to observed fraud or abuse. (10%) - Strategic Planning and Development
• Provides advanced clinical nursing practice by writing, obtaining and monitoring grants for programs.
• Is knowledgeable about various nursing related programs that provide funding and monitors for "new" opportunity.
• Identifies research issues to improve standards and practice.
• Serves as a clinical resource for nursing staff, students, physicians and other support services.
• Provides advanced clinical nursing practice in specialty area. (10%) - Engages in Professional/Community Activities
• Participates in the performance improvement process utilizing appropriate research to support this.
• Develops policy and procedures, nursing standards and/or guidelines as appropriate.
• Evaluates current policy and procedure, nursing standards and/or guidelines.
• In concert with the managers or project leaders determines the effectiveness of research projects on identified problems/issues and follows up with Nursing Leadership.
• Maintains current knowledge of healthcare research-related issues, trends, and scientific developments. (10%) - Talent Management.
• Assists with student programs as requested.
• Participates in program development for managers and staff surrounding research.
• Serves in a mentorship, supervisory, and/or consultative capacity to students and staff. (5%) - Demonstrates professional responsibility to the agency by membership on Denver Health Committees

• Publishes in peer reviewed journals and is a speaker in local, national and international forums.
• Participates regularly in peer performance appraisals ensuring identification of areas of strength as well as areas for professional development.
• Takes action to ensure all goals set forth in the annual performance appraisal are achieved.
• Performs and evaluates his/her practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, regulations, hospital and departmental policies and standards of care. Identifies knowledge and skill needs through self-assessment, peer review and supervisor review. (10%) - Maintains Professional Ethics and Ethical Manner
• Serves as an inspirational teacher and consultant for staff concerning the processes to be followed in identifying, analyzing and resolving ethical issues affecting individual and/or groups of clients.
• Serves in a capacity to develop specific interventions to correct ethical concerns specific to the specialty area.
• Promotes respect for patients', families, and staff privacy and confidentiality of patient/family/staff information.
• Represents nursing for study review at COMIRB as appropriate.
• Develops outcome criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of solutions to ethical issues. (10%) - Demonstrates professional responsibility for Community and National Practice initiatives
• Obtains/maintains specialty certification as applicable
• Speaks publicly on nursing and health care issues.
• Assists individuals and teams to identify use of research in care issues.
• Consults with physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary team to define research issues and/or practice.
• Maintains and enhances clinical role and knowledge by participation in educational offerings outside the agency. (10%) - Safety/Quality
• Practices sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures;
• Identifies safety and infection control issues.
• Evaluates quality, effectiveness and efficiency of nursing care provided.
• Promotes quality care by redefining priorities for care based on evaluation of patient/family response or changing condition.
• Evaluates practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, regulations, hospital and departmental policies, and standards of care.
• Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager and educator for the next evaluation period.
• Maintains safe environment. (10%)
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required and
- Master's Degree Nursing Required or
- Doctorate Degree PhD or DNP in related field preferred
Work Experience:
- 1-3 years in a hospital-based patient care setting providing patient care Required
- 1-3 years Clinical nurse leadership and/or education Required
- 1-3 years in clinical research Required
Licenses:
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
- RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of techniques, methods, and competencies of clinical nursing practices.
- Knowledge of quality improvement practices, regulatory standards and research compliance requirements.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with internal and external team members.
